Lady Dragons fall to Martin; HCHS sweeps scrimmages

Harlan battled back in the fourth quarter on Saturday at Hazard, but the comeback fell short as Martin County held on for a 41-36 victory in scrimmage action.

Lyndsey Cassell scored 16 and Kristen Isaac added 13 to lead Martin County, a 15th Region team.

Senior forward Natalee King scored 11 and eighth-grade guard Ella Karst added 10 for the Lady Dragons.

Martin took a 9-5 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 22-16 at halftime. Harlan trailed 31-23 after three quarters before fighting back in the final period. Karst hit a pair of 3-pointers in the comeback, and Emma Owens came off the bench to hit four of four at the line.

The Lady Dragons will open their regular season schedule on Dec. 3 at home against Corbin.

Harlan County warmed up for its season opener next week with a 68-51 win in scrimmage action Saturday at East Ridge.

Senior forward Morgan Blakley scored 24 points to lead the Lady Bears. Junior forward Kassy Owens added 13. Jaylin Preston came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers in a nine-point effort. Jaylin Smith and Hannah Wood each tossed in eight points. Kelly Beth Hoskins and Dixie Ewing scored three each.

Freshman center Taylor Lunsford scored 17 points and seventh-grade guard Kylie Noe added 16 as Harlan County coasted to a 62-32 win in junior varsity action.

Izzy Kirby tossed in eight for the Lady Bears, followed by Scarlett Rowe and Jenna Wilson with five each, Kylie Jones with four, Paige Phillips with three, and Hailey Austin and Taytum Griffin with two each.

The Lady Bears will open their season on Dec. 3 at home against Shelby Valley.
