Lady Bears sweep scrimmages in summer opener

Harlan County opened its summer schedule with a pair of wins Monday at home, defeating Knox Central 53-43 and Red Bird 56-34.

Senior guards Hannah Wood and Morgan Blakley scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the Lady Bears pulled away in the second half against Knox after leading by only one at the half.

Blakley scored 12 points in the first half and Wood hit three 3-pointers as the Lady Bears overcame an early deficit to go up 25-24 at the break.

Kassy Owens added nine points, including three baskets in the second half as HCHS pushed its lead to 13 points.

Jaylin Smith scored eight, followed by Jacey Lewis with five and Taylor Lunsford with two.

Blakley poured in 22 points to lead Harlan County against Red Bird. Wood added 11 points. Owens and Lewis added seven and six points, respectively. Aaliyah Cloud and Smith scored three each. Jaylin Preston and Haley Middleton scored two each.

The Harlan County junior varsity team won its two opening scrimmages, defeating Red Bird 52-11 and Bell County 29-28.

Emma Mulkey and Scarlett Rowe led the Lady Bears against Red Bird with eight points each. Kylie Jones scored seven, followed by Kylie Noe and Abbi Fields with five each, Taylor Lunsford, Leah Davis and Paige Phillips with four each, Taytum Griffin with three and Hailey Austin and Ashley Preston with two each.

Harlan County was outscored 14-7 in the first half against Bell but rallied with a group of seventh-graders outscoring the Lady Cats 22-14 in the second half. Noe led HCHS with eight points. Jones, Fields and Cheyanne Rhymer scored four each. Lunsford scored three. Phillips and Preston added two each. Rowe and Griffin contributed one each.

Harlan County will play in a camp at Union College on Tuesday.
