Middlesboro scores in 8th to edge HCHS

A two-out single by Tyler Harris lifted Middlesboro to a 6-5 win in eight innings over visiting Harlan County on Thursday. The Jackets swept the two-game district series against the Bears, both by one run.

Harlan County rallied three times in the game, including two runs in the seventh to force extra innings.

Braden Ausmus and Lane Perry led Middlesboro (4-7) with a double and single each. Shawn North and Riley Gent singled twice each. Collier Elkins and Chris Callihan had one double each. Harris and Tyshawn Simpson had one single each.

Callihan started and pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits, with five strikeouts and two walks. Harris earned the win as he retired all four Bears he faced, striking out three.

J Harris led the 2-8 Bears with two singles. Jordan Steele had a double. Justin Brown, Tyler Casolari and Jonathan Wilder added one single each.

Benjamin Lewis gave up three runs (all unearned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts and one walk. Brayden Blakley allowed three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts and three walks.

Harlan County will play host to Letcher Central on Monday. Middlesboro travels to Washburn, Tenn., on Monday.
