Dragons fall at Shelby Valley

With Cody Potter and Blake Burke teaming for 48 points, Shelby Valley defeated visiting Harlan 76-54 on Saturday.

Potter, a sophomore, hit four 3-pointers in a 26-point effort. Burke, a senior, added 22 points for the 2-0 Wildcats, who are coached by Evarts graduate Jim Bob Hicks.

Harlan (0-2) got nine points each from Jordan Akal, Cade Barnes and Jacob Wilson.

The Dragons were outscored in each of the four quarters and were their own worst enemy at times by missing 14 of 22 at the free-throw line.

Burke had three baskets in the first quarter as Shelby Valley built a 13-10 lead. Wilson had two of the Dragons’ four baskets in the period.

Shelby Valley extended its lead to 34-28 by halftime as Potter and Burke each scored six points. Cade Barnes and Tate Bryson each had five points in the quarter for Harlan.

The Wildcats blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Harlan 24-11 as Potter had four baskets and Tanner Bentley added three. Potter had 11 points in the fourth period as Shelby Valley outscored the Dragons 18-15.

Harlan will open its district schedule Tuesday at home against Middlesboro in a girls/boys doubleheader.
