The Harlan County Probation and Parole office will be accepting donations of toiletry items to provide miners affected by the recent Blackjewel mining bankruptcy from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at 227 Industrial Park Road, Suite 105, in Harlan (next to Southern Wholesale). Items include, but are not limited to: Soap/shampoo/shaving cream, toothpaste/toothbrush/floss, dish washing detergent, laundry detergent, toilet paper/ paper towels, famine hygiene products, deodorant, haircare products, baby wipes and hand soap.

Harlan County CAA is accepting donations for the miners and their families affected by the Blackjewel mining bankruptcy. You can drop off cash/check donations to April Vargas from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at HCCAA, located at 319 Camden Street in Harlan. Donation receipts can be given. All donations will be used directly for rent, utilities and food.

JULY 25-SEPT. 19

The Levitt AMP Middlesboro Music Series will be held at the downtown Middlesboro Levitt Lot each Thursday at 6:30 p.m. through Sept. 19. Experience free, live music with this lineup of impressive artists: Aug.15; Sammy Miller and The Congregation, Aug. 22; Larkin Poe, Aug. 29;Southern Avenue, Sept. 5; Sister Sadie, Sept. 12; Mike Farris & the Fortunate Few, Sept. 19. The public is invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open lawn setting. There will be food trucks and vendors on site. Admission is free. Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more.

With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Harlan County Schools open for students on Wednesday, August 14th. We encourage you to contact your child’s school or wait until school begins to purchase schools supplies. Through funding from the Harlan County Board of Education and many generous donations, most supplies have been purchased for students this year. Please do not spend your money needlessly. AUG. 16

The second annual Shine Your Light 5k, benefiting the Cumberland Hope Center, will be Aug. 16 at 8:30 p.m. with registration opening at 7:30 p.m. in the lower parking lot of the Harlan Center. The cost of registration is $10 up until race day, increasing to $15 to register the day of the race. Three guest speakers will also share their experiences of the Cumberland Hope Center during the race. For more information, call 606-573-4156.

AUG. 17, SEPT. 21

Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Participants will also receive a limited edition T-shirt. AUG. 24

The 2019 Lillian Faye Simpson Golf Classic will be held on Aug. 24 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland. A four-player scramble, the event has an entry fee of $300 per team, including green fees, use of cart, event T-shirt and lunch. Golfers may choose tee times at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Registration for each will be at 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Additionally, there will be a longest drive contest and closest to pin contest. The Harlan County Bicentennial Ball will be held at the Harlan Center on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per couple. This includes food, dancing, music and red carpet entrance. For more information, call 606-573-4156.

The Isaiah-Creech reunion will be on Sept. 1 at the lower shelter in Kingdom Come State Park, located at 500 Park Road in Cumberland. All family members are encouraged to come and have fun. The 17th annual Totz reunion will be held on Sept. 14 at Coal Miners Park in Benham beginning at 10 a.m. Dinner will be ready by noon — organizers plan to have chicken, barbecue, hot dogs with chili, chips, soft drinks, tea and cold water along with coffee and doughnuts. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
