New Harlan captures middle school title

New Harlan captured the county middle school championship with a 7-1 win over Cumberland on Tuesday at the James A. Cawood field.

Isaac Kelly and Samuel Henson led the Patriots with one single each.

Kelly pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and three walks to earn the win.

Junior Sanchez, Tyler Lunsford and Patrick Mandrell had one single each for the Redskins.

Carroll struck out seven and walked seven as he pitched a complete game.

Cumberland advanced to the finals with a 23-4 win over Harlan in the first game Tuesday.

Steven Childers led the Redskins with a double and two singles. Tyler Lunsford added three singles. Junior Sanchez, Kaden Boggs and Christian Maggard had two singles each. Patrick Mandrell added a double. Liam Garland and Shawn Carroll added one single each.

Garland struck out four and walked five in five innings on the mound. Mandrell pitched one hitless inning.

Will Cassim led Harlan on offense with two singles. Matthew Nunez and Baylor Varner added one single each.

Jared Moore struck out six and walked two in five innings on the mound. Cassim walked four in one inning in the mound.

Harlan lost 12-3 at Barbourville on May 4.

Donovan Montanaro had the only Harlan hit with a single. Montanaro struck out four and walked eight in 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Cassim struck out one to finish the game.

The Dragons finished the season with a 2-12 mark.

New Harlan (17-4) will play in state competition Saturday in Prestonsburg, taking on Fleming Neon at noon and Pikeville at 2 p.m.
