The Harlan County youth-led TOWN HALL has been rescheduled to a later date when legislators as well as community leaders can be in attendance. Harlan County KFTC members have decided to attend The People’s Movement-United We Stand Rally in Frankfort. The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet March 13 at David’s Steak in Corbin. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the meeting to follow. The first guest speaker will be Debra Hembree Lambert a candidate for the Third District Kentucky Supreme Court Justice seat. The second guest speaker will be Matt Anderson a Republican candidate in the May primary election for the 82nd District State Representative seat. Any retiree (and spouse) receiving retirement benefits from KERS, CERS or SPRS is welcome to attend. There will be a Community SPARK event from 6-8 p.m. on March 15 at Benham Schoolhouse Inn featuring music and refreshments. Participants will be creating designs for a series of murals to be placed in the Tri-Cities.

Harlan LITTLE LEAGUE sign-ups will be held at Huff Park in downtown Harlan on March 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (final day) Leagues and ages include: Wee Ball, 2 to 4 year olds (co-ed); Tee Ball, 5 to 6 year olds. (co-ed) Minor League Baseball, 7 to 8 year olds; softball, 7 to 12 year old girls; Major League Baseball. 9 to 12 year old boys. You can also sign up online at Harlanlittleleague.com. The cost is $50 per player, families with multiple players will receive $5 discount for each player after the first. There is a $50 late fee to sign up after March 17. There will be a St. Paddy’s Day BLOCK PARTY at the Courthouse Square in downtown Pineville from 1-11 p.m. on March 17 featuring all day live music, games, fashion and craft vendors, food, drinks, pizza eating contest, March Madness and fireworks.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park and Lissa-Beck Event Planning will present the BRIDAL & PROM EXPO 2018 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 17 at the C.V. Whitney Convention Center in Pineville.. There will be cakes, florists, caterers, jewelers, dresses, a runway and more.

Sunday evening VESPERS, sponsored by several Harlan area churches, will be held during Lent as follows: March 18, Christ Episcopal Church; Central and Williams Streets; and March 25, Harlan United Methodist Church. 201 E. Mound Street. Services start at 5 p.m. each week. These nondenominational services focus on spiritual preparation for Holy Week and Easter. Special music will be provided by the Harlan Ecumenical Choir. Everyone is welcome.

Pansy Christian Church will host a special singing beginning at 5 p.m. on March 23 featuring the “Grand Ole Gospel” band, of Middlesboro. Pastor Adam Roark invites everyone to attend and enjoy an evening of music, food and fellowship. A love offering will be taken for the band.

The fifth annual Harlan County Run with Color 5K will be held April 14 in downtown Harlan.

APRIL 16-18

TRYOUTS for the Harlan County High School Dance Team will be held on April 16, 17 and 18, from 3-5 p.m. at the HCHS gymnasium. Tryout forms are available in the elementary schools offices. An application is also available at the high school. Students will learn the tryout dance on April 16, and then review the dance on April 17. Actual tryouts will be held on the April 18. Coaches are Anna Carruba and Lisa Layne.

APRIL 21

The first annual Harlan, Ky. CRYPTO CON will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 21 at the Harlan County Extension Depot, located at 110 River Street, featuring lectures and presentations from wildlife and Bigfoot researchers. There will also be food, merchandise vendors, display tables and more. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

The second annual MOUNTAIN FIESTA, a free street festival for the community, will be held in Cumberland Gap from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 21 featuring concerts, professional dance classes, art, craft demos, vendors, activities, food from Latin America and Appalachia.

APRIL 28

Registration is now open for the fourth annual RAVEN ROCK 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park in Cumberland on April 28. Run along and over some of the most extraordinary rock formations in the state, including Raven Rock, a giant rock exposure that soars 290 feet into the air at a 45-degree angle. Registration is now open for the second annual “Tour De Kingdom Come,” a 36-mile road race which includes the scenic Little Shepherd trail, and first annual “Dash for Cash,” an up hill 2.7 mile time trial, scheduled May 19 and 20. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
