NOV. 7, 14

DIABETIC WORKSHOPS will be hosted by the Harlan County Extension Office, Harlan County Health Department and Kentucky Homeplace on Nov. 7 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Extension Depot. Food demonstrations, diabetic basic presentations and more will be held each session. All the classes are free. To register or for more information, call 606-573-4464.

The Harlan County High School SBDM Council’s regular scheduled meeting will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Nov. 9 in the HCHS Media Center. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Harlan ARH Basketball Tournament, a Relay for Life fundraiser, will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the James A. Cawood Elementary School gym — doctors vs medical students, nurses vs steelworkers. Winners play each other for the championship. Half time cheer-off competition (all cheerleaders are ARH/DBC employees). Tickets will be sold for a 50/50 half court shot raffle with the drawing at half time. There will concessions, bake sale, face painting and games for kids. A donation booth will be set up with tax receipts available. Admission is $3, adults; children under 12, $1.

Don’s Super Saver, Doss Fuelco, Inc., and Harlan County Fiscal Court will be honoring all Harlan County veterans with a VETERANS DAY LUNCHEON at noon on Nov. 11 at two locations: Harlan Christian Church in downtown Harlan and Senior Citizens Center in Cumberland. All veterans and their spouses are invited.

Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op will host a METALLIC EMBOSSING WORKSHOP from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at 521 Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. This technique shows you how to turn ordinary picture frames, boxes, vases, etc. into works of art. For more information, check out their Facebook page.

The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
