Evarts, Cawood advance to finals

Evarts moved within a game of its second straight unbeaten season by rolling past Black Mountain 35-15 on Thursday in the semifinals of the seventh- and eighth-grade county tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

The Lady Cats jumped out to a 14-2 lead after one quarter and extended it to 28-2 by halftime as Jaylin Smith scored 18 of her game-high 19 points in the first half.

Isabelle Kirby led the Tigerettes with nine points.

Cawood raced to a 15-2 lead after one quarter in the second game and held off a late comeback to win 31-21 over James A. Cawood.

Gracie Simpson scored 15 points and Lauren Smith added nine for the Trojanettes.

Taylor Lunsford paced the Trojanettes with seven points.

Evarts will play Cawood at noon on Saturday in the county championship game. James A. Cawood will play Black Mountain at 10:30 a.m. for third place.
