MARCH 23

Pansy Christian Church will host a SPECIAL SINGING beginning at 5 p.m. on March 23 featuring the “Grand Ole Gospel” band, of Middlesboro. Pastor Adam Roark invites everyone to attend and enjoy an evening of music, food and fellowship. A love offering will be taken for the band.

An EVENING AMONG THE STARS of Pine Mountain will be presented from 7-10:30 p.m. on March 23 on the property of Truth Ministries, located at the entrance of Little Shepherd Trail (Letcher County side). There will be refreshments and live music.The event is free to attend (donations welcome). Observe the night sky through the lens’ of astronomical telescopes and see wonders that are out of this world. Remember to bring your own lawn chair or blankets and bundle up for chillier nights. Sunday evening VESPERS, sponsored by several Harlan area churches, will be held during Lent as follows: March 25, Harlan United Methodist Church. 201 E. Mound Street. Services start at 5 p.m. each week. These nondenominational services focus on spiritual preparation for Holy Week and Easter. Special music will be provided by the Harlan Ecumenical Choir. The 36th annual Tri-City Empty Stocking Easter EGG HUNT, in memory of Jim “Muggins” Bennett, at 10 a.m. on March 31 at Tri-Cities Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cumberland. Participants need to bring an Easter basket. There will be prize eggs along with door prizes. Park at the clinic — not along the road.

Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center will be having their annual EASTER EGG HUNT at 1 p.m. on March 31. All children 12 and under are invited to attend. There will be drawings for prizes and the Easter Bunny will be there for pictures.

Hilltop Ministry will host an Easter EGG HUNT at 4 p.m. on March 31 at James A. Cawood Elementary School, weather permitting. Rain date is April 1 at 4 p.m. Participants need to bring their Easter baskets.

The Harlan County Domestic Violence Council will host PHOTOS WITH THE EASTER BUNNY from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Don’s Super Saver on March 31. A 5×7 photo is $10 (printed while you wait/shop). All ages are welcome. All proceeds will be used locally to provide emergency services for victims of domestic violence.

APRIL 1

There will be a community SUNRISE SERVICE at 7:15 a.m. on April 1 on the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church, 306 E. Clover Street, Harlan. The service will be led by members of several area churches. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Kingdom Come State Park in Cumberland will host an EASTER EGG HUNT at 3 p.m. on April 1 at the shelter area for ages 10 and under. There will also be prizes, games and activities for children. For more information, call 606-589-4138.

The L&N/CSX Railroaders will meet at 10 a.m. on April 9 at the Harlan County Extension Depot. All retired and former railroaders are encouraged to attend.

The fifth annual Harlan County Run with Color 5K will be held April 14 in downtown Harlan.

APRIL 16-18

TRYOUTS for the Harlan County High School Dance Team will be held on April 16, 17 and 18, from 3-5 p.m. at the HCHS gymnasium. Tryout forms are available in the elementary schools offices. An application is also available at the high school. Students will learn the tryout dance on April 16, and then review the dance on April 17. Actual tryouts will be held on the April 18. Coaches are Anna Carruba and Lisa Layne.

APRIL 21

The first annual Harlan, Ky. CRYPTO CON will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 21 at the Harlan County Extension Depot, located at 110 River Street, featuring lectures and presentations from wildlife and Bigfoot researchers. There will also be food, merchandise vendors, display tables and more. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

The second annual MOUNTAIN FIESTA, a free street festival for the community, will be held in Cumberland Gap from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 21 featuring concerts, professional dance classes, art, craft demos, vendors, activities, food from Latin America and Appalachia.

Registration is now open for the fourth annual RAVEN ROCK 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park in Cumberland on April 28. Run along and over some of the most extraordinary rock formations in the state, including Raven Rock, a giant rock exposure that soars 290 feet into the air at a 45-degree angle. Registration is now open for the second annual “Tour De Kingdom Come,” a 36-mile road race which includes the scenic Little Shepherd trail, and first annual “Dash for Cash,” an up hill 2.7 mile time trial, scheduled May 19 and 20. Monthly INCOME LIMITS RAISED for Shepherd’s Pantry: One person, $1,276; two, $1,726; three, $2,177.
