On a night when it seemed she couldn’t miss, Leslie County junior guard Lexy Meyers found herself with the ball in a tie game with the final seconds ticking away. Meyers hit from the top of the key with six seconds left to send the visiting Lady Eagles to a 65-62 victory.

Meyers poured in 35 points to lead the 16-11 Lady Eagles. Haley Simpson added 18 points and nine rebounds.

“Leslie is.a good team and they played well,” Harlan County coach Debbie Green said. “I know that Meyers has been playing real well lately, and she hit some big shots tonight, especially the last one.”

Harlan County, which fell to 18-6, was led by Breann Turner and Phebe McHargue with 19 points. Reanna Middleton added 11 points. The Lady Bears played without senior guard K.K. Johnson, who served the final game of a two-game suspension.

Leslie never trailed after scoring the first six points of the game. Meyers hit all four of her shots in the opening quarter as the Lady Eagles built a 23-12 lead. Leslie led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter and 13 in the third quarter, but Harlan County battled back several times and finally pulled even on two occasions in the final minute, first on a basket by Phebe McHargue wit 36 seconds left and then on two free throws by McHargue with 15.9 seconds to play. McHargue had a chance to tie the game again at the buzzer, but her shot fell short.

“I don’t know which team will shot up for us some nights,” Green said. “I was worried about a lack of focus on Senior Night, and I think that happened. I was still proud of our effort though and how we battled back.”

Harlan County closes its regular season schedule Friday at Knox Central in a 6 p.m. game.
