Lee selected as local teacher of the year

Penny Lee, a first- through third-grade teacher at Wallins Elementary School, is the local winner of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5171 and Mountain Trail VFW Auxiliary 5171 recently selected Lee as the winner.

Lee was chosenb from entries submitted to VFW Post 5171. She received a Good Job Award in appreciation for all she does for veterans and a check for $50 to help with school projects.

Lee will now compete on the national level for the VFW Teacher of the Year award. Each year, three national recipients receive a $1,000 donation to their individual professional development account, a $1,000 grant to their school and an all-expense-paid trip to attend the VFW National Convention in July to receive their national award.

During the nationwide competition, the VFW recognizes more than 1,000 teachers at various levels, presenting hundreds of thousands of dollars in awards.
