Dragons, Jackets split district doubleheader

Kilian Ledford hit the game-winning 3-pointer as Harlan won its second district road game with a 52-51 victory Tuesday at Middlesboro.

Ledford scored 21 points, Jordan Akal tossed in 17 and Cade Barnes added 10 to account for all but four points for the 2-1 Dragons.

Junior point guard Jabari Kyle scored 16 and senior center Mykel Griffin added 14 for the 0-2 Jackets.

Middlesboro outscored the Dragons by one in each of the first two quarters and led 29-27 at halftime. Harlan tied the game at 41-41 heading into the final period.

Harlan will return to action Friday at home against Williamsburg.

Harlan’s free throw problems continued Tuesday as the Lady Dragons missed 12 of 28 at the line in a 47-46 loss at Middlesboro.

Senior guard Baylee Woody scored 15 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Kailey Owens and Gracie Moles added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Harlan was led by junior forward Natalee King with 20 points. Payeton Charles chipped in with 10 points.

King scored seven points in the first quarter and Savanna Smith added a pair of 3-pointers to give the Lady Dragons an 18-11 lead after one quarter. King added nine points in the second quarter, but Middlesboro cut the deficit to 31-28 at halftime as Moles and Woody each had three baskets.

The Lady Dragons missed all seven free throw attempts in the third quarter and were outscored 11-2 to fall behind 39-33.

Ella Karst scored six points in the fourth quarter as Harlan fought back before falling by one point.

The Lady Dragons will go on the road for another district game Friday at Bell County.
