A new primary election is coming up on May 22, and all county offices will be on the ballot in all Kentucky counties.

According to Harlan County Clerk Donna Hoskins, potential candidates still have time to file their paperwork to be put on the ballot.

‘We’ve got all the county offices from constable to judge-executive,” Hoskins said. “That includes sheriff, county clerk, magistrates, property valuation administrator, jailer, circuit clerk, county attorney, commonwealth’s attorney, district judge and all other county offices.”

Hoskins explained the deadline to file as a candidate is 4 p.m. on Jan. 30.

While different offices require different qualifications and filing fees, Hoskins gave some general requirements which must be met in order to be placed on the ballot.

“To file, you have to be a registered voter in Harlan County for at least a year,” Hoskins said. “You have to have two signers of the same party, file your declaration papers with our office (Harlan County Clerk), and you file a treasurer’s report.”

Magistrates and constables are required to file for the district in which they reside.

So far, a number of candidates have already filed, including one for Harlan county clerk, three for District 1 magistrate, one for Harlan County jailer, one for property valuation administrator, one for District 2 magistrate, one for Harlan County judge-executive, one for district 3 magistrate, one for Harlan County sheriff, two for District 5 magistrate, one for District 4 constable, one for District 2 constable, one for District 5 constable, one for commonwealth’s attorney, and one for circuit court clerk 26th District.

Hoskins explained the primary elections are to determine the Republican and Democrat party candidates for the offices on the ballot.
