New Harlan sweeps doubleheader from Neon

New Harlan swept a doubleheader from visiting Fleming Neon in middle school baseball action, winning 17-1 and 8-3.

Carter Howard led the Patriots in the opening game with three singles. Samuel Henson added two singles. Isaac Kelly had a double. Dillon Scott, Darren Alred, Caleb Brewer and Ethan Griffith had one single each.

Kelly pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.

Howard had two singles in the nightcap. Kelly added a double. Thomas Jordan, Brewer, Henson and Jayden Sutton added singles.

Jordan pitched two innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Henson struck out one and allowed no hits in one inning.

Henson, Howard team to shut out Letcher

Samuel Henson and Thomas Jordan combined to pitch a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks as New Harlan blanked visiting Letcher 14-0 on Saturday in middle school baseball action.

Isaac Kelly led the New Harlan offense with a double and two singles. Brody Turner added a double. Thomas Jordan, Caleb Brewer, Carter Howard and Ethan Griffith added one single each.

Hall had Letcher’s only hits with a single.

Maggard leads New Harlan past Middlesboro

Rylie Maggard pitched a complete game and added an inside-the-park homer and double on offense as New Harlan rolled to a 15-2 win over Middlesboro in middle school softball action.

Aaliyah Lewis, Hailey Austin and Abbi Fields added two singles each for the Lady Patriots. Hailey Mabes and Braylee Engle added one single each.

Adkins led Middlesboro with a double and single. Bruce added a single.

Saylor leads Orioles to win over White Sox

Brycen Saylor drove in two runs and scored two with an inside-the-park homer and double as the Dairy Hut Orioles improved to 6-0 in minor league action from the Tri-City Little Little League with a 4-3 win Friday over the Cumberland Tourism White Sox.

Julianna Johnson added a double for the Orioles. Lexi Boggs, Robby Johnson and Katie Smith added one single each.

Byron Shepherd led the White Sox with an inside-the-park homer, triple and single for an RBI and two runs scored. Cydnee Adams added a double and single. Caden Pratt had a single.

MonStars fall in Battle in the Mountains

The MonStars, a local group of first- and second-grade basketball players from Harlan County schools, lost a pair of games to Clay County on Saturday in the Battle in the Mountains Tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

Clay won 21-18 in the opening game. Trey Creech and Easton Engle each scored five to lead the MonStars. Jax Shepherd scored four. Blake Johnson and Carson Sanders added two each.

Johnson scored eight and Shepherd added seven as the MonStars fell 34-24 in the second game. Engle tossed in three, followed by Creech and Andrew Vance with two each.

Golf scramble to support HHS boys basketball

The Harlan High School Boys basketball team will host a four-man golf scramble on Saturday at the Harlan Country Club.

The Entry fee is $100 per team. Registration will begin at 9 am, with the scramble beginning at 9:30.

Lunch will be provided. Call 273-9066 to pre-register or to ask any questions you may have.

All proceeds go to support Harlan High School’s boys basketball program.
