Top seeds advance in county tournament

The favorites advanced in the first round of play Saturday at the seventh- and eighth-grade county tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

Junior Sanchez scored 12 points and Jonah Mumford added 11 as Cumberland edged Evarts 31-27 in the opening game.

Aiden Reynolds led Evarts with 10 points.

Wallins rolled to a 43-16 win over Cawood in the second game of the evening. Evan Simpson led the Purple Devils with 13 points.

Hunter Clem and Jason Fultz each scored four to pace Cawood.

Rosspoint rolled to a 48-21 win over Black Mountain in the final game of the quarterfinals. Carter Howard scored 10 and Will Cassim added eight to lead the Wildcats.

Reggie Cottrell paced Black Mountain with 13 points.

James A. Cawood, the county’s top seed, received a bye in the first round with Green Hills not having a seventh- and eighth-grade team this season. James A. Cawood will play Cumberland on Tuesday at 6:30 with Wallins taking on Rosspoint at 8. The consolation and championship games are set for Thursday at Harlan County High School.
