Harlan teams close Florida tourney with victories

Both Harlan teams finished 2-1 in the Inisfree Hotels Pensacola Beach Classic with wins Monday on the final day of action.

The Green Dragons defeated Rose Hill, Texas, 60-47 as sophomore forward Johann Gist had his best varsity performance with 17 points. Sophomore guards Kaleb McLendon and Jordan Akal contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Gist hit three 3-pointers in the opening quarter and McLendon added two as the 3-7 Dragons grabbed a 22-12 lead after one period. Rose Hill cut the deficit to 31-28 by halftime, but Harlan limited Rose Hill to only three points in the third quarter to reclaim control.

The Lady Dragons limited Washburn, Tenn., to only six field goals on the way to a 43-25 victory.

Senior forward Natalee King scored 18 and junior guard Angel Wynn added 11 for the 7-4 Lady Dragons.

The Harlan boys will return to action Saturday at home against Lee, Va. The Harlan girls will play at Letcher Central on Friday.
