The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

Kingdom Come State Park’s Scarecrow Extravaganza will be held through Oct. 31 featuring scarecrows made by businesses and individuals from the Tri-City area that pop up all over the park.

Help promote youth camp during the annual Fish Fry at Camp Blanton (or barbecue sandwich meal) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 5. Meals can be purchased for an $8 donation.

This year’s Harlan Haunt Fest begins at 10 a.m. on Oct. 5 at the Harlan Center featurin gspecial guests, presentations/panels/talks, cosplay contest, games food and fun. Vendor floor closes at 6 p.m. Party with food, live music by The Tripps (8 p.m.) and Masquerade Dance until midnight. All day admission is $10, kids under 12 free with adult.

The official Harlan Bicentennial Ghost Walk/Ghost Hunt with paranormal researcher Tony Felosi, a part of Harlan Haunt Fest, will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 5 (start at the Harlan Center). It begins at the Harlan Center and continues through the streets of Harlan to the actual courthouse location of the infamous 1942 shooting of Manzo Shepherd. Witness a live re-enactment that recreates the sights and sounds of the past.

The Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meet will be continue on Oct. 5 at the Southeast Community & Technical College’s Cumberland campus from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. There will be music, food, demonstrations, crafts, vendors and a car show. Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College will host a free workshop, LGBTQAI+ Means What?, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 7 on all campuses through Skype. Presented with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, along with the Southeast Honors Program, the workshop will give an overview of the terms used within the LGBT+ community regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. Participants will be looking at current legal protections (or lack thereof) this community faces and explore how to best support students, family, friends and neighbors. The Appalachian-TREE Project’s will offer an eight-week Cooking Class Series ranging from budgeting to healthy cooking skills. This class is available to a limited number of adults who prepare meals for children 18 and under. The session starts on Oct. 7 and will be held from noon to 2 p.m. or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church (across from Harlan High School). The instructor will be Becky Pigman, owner of Icing on the Cake. Participants will receive compensation for their time in completing study surveys; chef’s knife, cutting pad and ingredients for healthy meals; and recipes and instructions for preparing healthy affordable meals at home. A Bicentennial Festival will be held on Oct. 10-12 in downtown Harlan, a three-day birthday bash in honor of Harlan County. At the You can expect a carnival, a parade, delicious food, great music, demonstrations, Harlan County history, fireworks and lots of cake. Help make the festival a once in a lifetime event. Any individual or group interested in participating as a vendor or as a participant in the parade should visit the Harlan Center or the Judge-Executive’s Office for an application.This festival will also mark the debut of the Bicentennial Stage in downtown Harlan. The Harlan County High School SBDM Council will have a regular scheduled meeting at 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 10 in room 145. Everyone is invited to attend.

OCT. 11-12

Benham Methodist Church will host a fundraiser on Oct. 11 from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Soup and sandwich may be purchased for $6. Silent auction for two 1939 handmade quilts (embroidered signatures of past members). All winning bids need to be picked up by 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Harlan County Public School District’s technology department will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the Central Administrative Office conference room to present information about internet services in the school district. Information on access and restrictions for Internet usage by students and staff will be presented, along with details of the federal E-Rate program, the Children Internet Protection Act and requirements and guidelines to protect students from inappropriate content which may cause harm. The Lights Over Evarts Parade is slated for Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. Line up will begin at 7 p.m. behind Evarts High School with the parade traveling through town and ending at the Off Road Park. Prizes for the most lit up off-road vehicle include: Grand Prize ($250), First Place ($150) and Second Place ($100). Vehicles must have some form of lighting attach to them other than headlights, such as aftermarket light bars or string lights. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
