Harlan Tourism is celebrating the Bicentennial by hosting a series of lectures provided by local historians. The first lecture will be held Sept. 19 at the Harlan Center. The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet Sept. 19 at Golden Corral in London. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow. The guest speaker will be District 94 state representative Angie Hatton. Any retiree (and spouse) receiving retirement benefits from KERS, CERS or SPRS are welcome to attend. The Levitt AMP Middlesboro Music Series will be held at the downtown Middlesboro Levitt Lot each Thursday at 6:30 p.m. through Sept. 19. Emergency Management and tThe American Red Cross are celebrating Harlan County’s Bicentennial by making Harlan County a safer place. On Sept. 21, volunteers and officials will be visiting homes across Harlan County to install free smoke detectors. If you need smoke detectors, you can sign up by calling the Red Cross at 859-951-7814 or Emergency Management at 606-573-6082. The Red Cross will equip volunteers with all the necessary information and all the tools they will need. Anyone wishing to be an installation volunteer can contact Emergency Management.

Opening day for Harlan County Pee Wee Football and Harlan County Pee Wee Flag Football will be Sept. 21. Games will be held at the Harlan County High School football field.

The fifth annual Log Mountain Rod Run will be held from 11 a.m.t o4 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the Bell County Area Technology Center, located in Pineville new to Bell County High School. The entry fee is $15 and includes T-shirt (more shirts available). Trophies will be awarded for Best in Show, Fan Favorite and Best Custom. Rev it Up Contest begins at 3 p.m. Pulled pork will be provided by Bowman’s Best Barbecue. Sponsored by the Bell County ATC SkillsUSA Club, all proceeds go to students to help pay for region/state.

Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Harlan County Bicentennial Safety Day will be Sept. 21. Make your home a little safer or volunteer to make other homes safer and help us reach our goal of 200 smoke detectors per district in Harlan County. Call 859-951-7814 to register your home for a free smoke detector installation.

Smith School reunion will take place at Martins Fork Lake on Sept. 21 starting at 10 a.m. at the the top shelter. Bring folding chairs, soft drinks and/or a covered dish. There will be games and fun for all.

The Appalachian-TREE Project’s will offer an eight-week Cooking Class Series ranging from budgeting to healthy cooking skills. This class is available to a limited number of adults who prepare meals for children 18 and under. The session starts on Oct. 7 and will be held from noon to 2 p.m. or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church (across from Harlan High School). The instructor will be Becky Pigman, owner of Icing on the Cake. Participants will receive compensation for their time in completing study surveys; chef’s knife, cutting pad and ingredients for healthy meals; and recipes and instructions for preparing healthy affordable meals at home. A Bicentennial Festival will be held on Oct. 10-12 in downtown Harlan, a three-day birthday bash in honor of Harlan County. The Lights Over Evarts Parade is slated for Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. Line up will begin at 7 p.m. behind Evarts High School with the parade traveling through town and ending at the Off Road Park. Prizes for the most lit up off-road vehicle include: Grand Prize ($250), First Place ($150) and Second Place ($100). Vehicles must have some form of lighting attach to them other than headlights, such as aftermarket light bars or string lights.
