The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.
The Harlan County Probation and Parole office will be accepting donations of toiletry items to provide miners affected by the recent Blackjewel mining bankruptcy from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at 227 Industrial Park Road, Suite 105, in Harlan (next to Southern Wholesale). Items include, but are not limited to: Soap/shampoo/shaving cream, toothpaste/toothbrush/floss, dish washing detergent, laundry detergent, toilet paper/ paper towels, famine hygiene products, deodorant, haircare products, baby wipes and hand soap.
Harlan County CAA is accepting donations for the miners and their families affected by the Blackjewel mining bankruptcy. You can drop off cash/check donations to April Vargas from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at HCCAA, located at 319 Camden Street in Harlan. Donation receipts can be given. All donations will be used directly for rent, utilities and food.

The Levitt AMP Middlesboro Music Series will be held at the downtown Middlesboro Levitt Lot each Thursday at 6:30 p.m. from July 18 through Sept. 19. Experience free, live music with this lineup of impressive artists: Parker Milsap, July 18; Dwayne Dopsie and The Zydeco Hellraisers, July 25; Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, Aug. 1; Brent Cobb, Aug. 8; Heather Newman, Aug.15; Sammy Miller and The Congregation, Aug. 22; Larkin Poe, Aug. 29;Southern Avenue, Sept. 5; Sister Sadie, Sept. 12; Mike Farris & the Fortunate Few, Sept. 19. The James A. Cawood High School 1980s Reunion will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. on July 27 at Camp Blanton. Free to all alumni, faculty and staff that attended or worked at JACHS at any time during the 1980s. There will be a potluck dinner and raffle on Saturday during the reunion. On July 26, there will be an activity day with swimming, hiking, trivia and ending in with a bonfire. Volunteers are needed to help with set up and breakdown of the event. Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more. The schedule includes: Aug. 2, Cars 3.
JULY 27
Harlan Tourism will host Fun Fest at the Harlan Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 27 featuring games, food, fun, inflatables, popular children’s character’s and more. The evening will be free for all coal miners affected by the recently Blackjewel mining bankruptcy. For all other attendees, the cost is $10f for a family at the door. With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Concerts on Clover, will be held on Aug. 1 in downtown Harlan on the front plaza of the Harlan Center starting at 6:30 p.m, hosted by Harlan Tourism.

A ministry outreach event will be held at Blue Courts in Harlan on Aug. 1 and 2. The main focus of the event is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through fellowship. Morning Star Church will host a vacation bible school, Adventure to the Islands, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., August 1-3. Five year olds to 11 year olds are welcome. The church is located at 108 North 2nd Street (The former Francis Florist location). Bible stories, hula contests, hula hoop contests, limbo, and a slip and slide on the last night. FLUOR and their joint venture partner United Infrastructure Group, Inc., (UIG) will be hosting a job fair at the courthouse on Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m for laid-off Blackjewel employees. Applications will be taken for laborers and equipment operators for an upcoming highway expansion project in Asheville, North Carolina, around a two and a half hour drive from Harlan. FLUOR and UIG are looking to fill 25-35 positions for the project, anticipating a four-year term. The employment opportunity will give those hired the ability to continue residing in Harlan with lodging in Asheville provided by the company throughout the work week. Competitive pay and benefit packages are also being offered.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will be holding a Hunter Education Course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the Harlan County Extension Depot at 110 River Street in Harlan. The hunter must attend the session and pass an exam to be certified. All hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1975 must complete this course. The hunter must be at least 9 years of age to be certified. All participants must register for the course at www.fw.ky.gov. The second annual Shine Your Light 5k, benefiting the Cumberland Hope Center, will be Aug. 16 at 8:30 p.m. with registration opening at 7:30 p.m. in the lower parking lot of the Harlan Center. The cost of registration is $10 up until race day, increasing to $15 to register the day of the race. Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Participants will also receive a limited edition T-shirt. The 2019 Lillian Faye Simpson Golf Classic will be held on Aug. 24 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland. A four-player scramble, the event has an entry fee of $300 per team, including green fees, use of cart, event T-shirt and lunch. Golfers may choose tee times at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Registration for each will be at 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Additionally, there will be a longest drive contest and closest to pin contest. The Harlan County Bicentennial Ball will be held Aug. 31 with two tickets costing $50. This includes food, dancing and more. Other details will be released at a later date.

The 17th annual Totz reunion will be held on Sept. 14 at Coal Miners Park in Benham beginning at 10 a.m. Dinner will be ready by noon — organizers plan to have chicken, barbecue, hot dogs with chili, chips, soft drinks, tea and cold water along with coffee and doughnuts. Bring a covered dish or your favorite dessert. Bring your own lounge/lawn chair if you wish. There will be door prizes. Tickets for the drawing will be available when upon arrival/sign in. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
