Virginia man arrested after running from police

A man from Max Meadows, Virginia, was arrested after allegedly trying to steal from Walmart.

Austin Cooper, 27, was arrested by Harlan City Police Department officer William Clogston on July 20.

According to the citation, Clogston was sitting in his vehicle in the Walmart parking lot when a Walmart loss prevention associate yelled for him to stop Cooper. The associate told Clogston that Cooper allegedly shoved him while trying to exit the store without paying for an item, which was valued at nearly $50.

Clogston turned on his lights and began pursuing Cooper. Cooper then ran through a series of bushes when Clogston tried to use his taser to no avail. Clogston was joined by other officers and Kentucky State Police troopers to eventually apprehend Cooper with no further incident, according to the citation.

Cooper was charged with first- and second-degree fleeing/evading police (on foot), second-degree robbery and two counts resisting arrest.

Cooper was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,000 full-cash bond.

Members of the Evarts Police Department, Loyall Police Department and Harlan County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the pursuit.

In other police activity;

• Freddie Westfelt, 44, was arrested by Cumberland Police Department officers on July 16. He was charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine) and third-degree terroristic threatening. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond, 10 percent with bail credit;

• Lonnie Skidmore, 27, of Coldiron, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 18. He was charged with first-degree fleeing/evading police (on foot), first-degree wanton endangerment (police officer), first-degree wanton endangerment, resisting arrest, no lights on bicycle and failure to comply with bicycle safety regulations. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $3,500 full-cash bond;

• Harvey Middleton, 37, of Wallins, was arrested by Harlan County Detention Center officials on July 18. He was charged with first-degree trafficking controlled substance (drug unspecified). He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention as a state inmate;

• Tony Huff, 38, of Evarts, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Department deputies on July 18. He was charged with two counts first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine), second-degree possession of controlled substance (drug unspecified), two counts possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence and possession of marijuana. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on two full-cash bonds totaling $8,500;

• Lawrence Lucas, 36, of Lynch, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 19. He was charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (drug unspecified), first-degree promoting contraband, possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree trafficking controlled substance (greater than or less than 2 grams methamphetamine), identity theft, operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs/alcohol, first-degree criminal possession of forged instrument, giving an officer false identifying information, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, no registration plates, no registration receipt and tampering with physical evidence. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $3,500 full-cash bond;

• Jerry McKee, 31, of Busy, was arrested by Harlan County Detention Center officials on July 19. He was charged with first-degree trafficking controlled substance (greater than or equal to drug unspecified). He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center as a state inmate;

• Stephen Simpson, 33, of Cumberland, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Department deputies on July 19. He was charged with third-degree burglary and was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full-cash bond;

• Kayla Colinger, 29, of Wallins, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 19. She was charged with first-degree trafficking controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center with no bond set;

• Clayton Napier, 49, of Evarts, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 20. He was charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine) and failure to appear. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,500 full-cash bond;

• Samantha Jones, 24, of Cawood, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 20. She was charged with receiving stolen property (under $10,000), ATV violations, operating on suspended/revoked operator’s license, four counts non-payment of court costs/fees/fines and three counts failure to appear. She was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on two full-cash bonds totaling $1,500 and $200 of four time served with jail credit bonds;

• Jesse Faulkner, 27, of Cumberland, was arrested by Cumberland Police Department officers on July 20. He was charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine). He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $1,500 full-cash bond;

• Christopher Saylor, 47, of Wallins, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 21. He was charged with second-degree trafficking controlled substance, failure to appear and non-payment of court costs/fees/fines. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a pay-or-stay bond of $183 and two full-cash bonds totaling $3,000;

• Nathan Massingale, 38, of Wallins, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on July 21. He was charged with first-degree trafficking controlled substance (greater than or equal to 2 grams methamphetamine), possession of handgun by convicted felon, possession of defaced firearm and six counts probation violation for felony offense. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center with no bond set.
