This year’s Fun Filled Fourth of July Fest will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 4 in downtown Harlan around the Harlan Center, hosted by Harlan Tourism and sponsored by Don’s Super Saver. The celebration includes a 5K (9 a.m.), parade (5 p.m.), live music, vendors (open at 4 p.m.), food, fireworks and more. The annual Lynch 4th of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on July 4. Line up from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Lynch Church of God. Parade will pull out at 10 a.m. and head west and end at West Main Park with a brief patriotic ceremony, trophy presentation, free water, hot dogs and watermelon (while supplies last).

Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more. Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Kenvir will host Vacation Bible School, Giddyup Junction, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 8-12 with Bible lessons, crafts, games, puppet shows and a cookout each night. The Cawood Ledford Boys & Girls Club will host educational and fun day camps this summer. Each week is designed to provide Summer learning opportunities parents want and kids crave. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
