Only moments after suffering a 6-3 loss to Bell County earlier this month, the Harlan County Lady Bears were looking ahead to the rematch and an opportunity to even the score. The Lady Bears gained that revenge Monday with a 14-1 win at Bell County.

Kerrigan Creech was in control on the mound, pitching a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Hannah Johnson, the Lady Bears’ junior third baseman, drove in four runs on three doubles. Kerrigan Creech drove in three runs with a double and two singles. Brandy Adams drove in three runs with a double and single. Emily Collett added a double and single. Nikki Creech singled twice and stole two bases. Rhileigh Alred had a double.

Harlan County split two games Thursday in the Wizard of Ozz Classic at Letcher Central, falling 12-2 to Paintsville before edging Letcher Central 2-1.

A two-run single by Adams proved to be all the offense that HCHS needed in the nightcap, but the Lady Bears needed a big defensive play to avoid a walk-off loss as senior center fielder Nikki Creech was able to reach over the fence to take away a two-run homer from Letcher’s Alyssa Franklin in the fifth and final inning after Makennah Johnson had homered earlier in the inning to cut the deficit in half.

Adams led the HCHS offense with two singles. Nikki Creech had a double. Collett and Johnson added one single each.

Kerrigan Creech gave up one run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Adams had two singles in the loss to Paintsville and drove in both runs. Johnson added a double.
