BEVERLY — The All “A” Classic often brings out the best in the Harlan Lady Dragons, who entered the 30th annual tournament looking for their 12th championship.

Harlan (5-12) got off to a good start toward that goal in the opening game Monday, rolling past Oneida Baptist 57-26. The Lady Dragons scored most of their points in transition by forcing 29 OBI turnovers, including 23 in the first half when Harlan took control.

“No matter who we’re playing we’re trying to be consistent in what we do, and I thought we did a good job tonight,” Harlan coach Tiffany Hamm said. “

Senior guard Payeton Charles scored 14 to lead a balanced Harlan attack on a night when all 13 players in uniform saw extensive action.

Katy Schroeder, a 5-11 junior forward, led the 3-10 Lady Mountaineers with 15 points.

Hamm said the All “A” has always been an important tournament for Harlan, which has made the most appearances from the 13th Region in the All “A” Classic state tournament, including four straight trips from 2014 to 2017.

“We have a bunch of young kids, and I talked to them before the game about that,” Hamm said. “We’ve had two or three teams that have won multiple championships in this tournament. We’ve had a lot of success, and we want to continue that. It’s always nice to win a championship.”

Harlan forced 12 turnovers in the opening quarter and quickly grabbed control on 3-pointers by Natalee King and Charles to start the game. Oneida Baptist missed first seven shots from the field and trailed 9-2 before Schroeder broke the drought with 3:40 left in the opening period. OBI closed to within five when Schroeder scored inside and Emilie Field followed with a 3-pointer. Baskets by Angel Wynn, King and Alli Thompson in a 6-0 run close the quarter extended Harlan’s lead to 20-9.

Charles hit a pair of 3-pointers in an 11-0 run to open the second quarter as OBI again started zero-for-seven from the field. A Field 3 was the only basket in the period for OBI, which trailed 36-12 at the break after Ella Karst hit a 3-pointer and Kaylee Leslie scored inside in the final 28 seconds of the half.

Thompson scored twice early in the third quarter as Harlan opened the half with a 9-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from Madison Cole. Karst’s basket with 2:57 left in the period started a running clock as it extended the Lady Dragons’ lead to 50-14. Another 3 by Field helped OBI cut the deficit to 52-19 going into the final quarter.

Schroeder had all three Oneida baskets in the fourth quarter as OBI outscored Harlan 7-5. Ella Morton hit a 3-pointer and Karst added a basket to lead the Lady Dragons.

Harlan will play Williamsburg in the semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m., a rematch of last year’s championship game won by Williamsburg. Pineville will play Lynn Camp at 6 p.m. followed by Middlesboro taking on Barbourville in first-round games Tuesday.
