Lady Bruins pull away for win over HHS

Up 17-16 after one quarter, the Harlan Lady Dragons’ offense went cold with only 19 points over the final three quarters on the way to a 65-36 loss to Louisville Ballard in the first round of the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic at Clinton County High School.

Kiarah Carney, a junior guard, led the 4-6 Lady Bruins with 21 points. LaVonce Holland and Ayanna Morgan added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The 3-9 Lady Dragons were led by senior guard Payeton Charles with 11 points and junior forward Natalee King with 11.

Charles hit three 3-pointers in an 11-point first quarter as Harlan grabbed an early lead.

The Lady Dragons were outscored 26-7 in the decisive second quarter, led by 10 points from Morgan, to take a 44-24 lead into the break.

Ballard pushed its lead to 60-31 after three quarters as Carney led the Lady Bruins with 10 points.

Harlan will play Clinton County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and McCreary Central on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Harlan fell 68-47 to Frankfort on the final day of play at the Jim Lankster Classic last week in Lexington.

Payeton Charles scored 14 points and Natalee King added 10 to lead the Lady Dragons.
