The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

The 2018 Harlan County Christmas Parade will be held Dec. 8 in downtown Harlan.

A Jingle Bell Jog 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on Dec. 8 in downtown Harlan.

DEC. 9

Celebrate the Yuletide season as Pine Mountain Settlement School presents their annual Nativity Play at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the chapel. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance for special music.

DEC. 10-13

The Harlan County Bookmobile schedule for the week of Dec. 10 includes:

DEC. 11

The Harlan Area Retired Teachers will meet at 1 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Evarts Public Library. All retired teachers are invited to attend. There will have a potluck meal and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting, so bring your grandchildren or little friends. If there is no school the meeting will be canceled. Brian Bowman, veterans benefits field representative, will be at the Old Harlan County Courthouse, 210 E. Central St. in Harlan, on Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment onlyVeterans and their dependents will receive assistance filing for Federal and State veteran’s benefits. This service is provided free of charge by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. To apply, veterans need to furnish copies of pertinent documentation to verify eligibility. The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet Dec.11 at David’s Steak House in Corbin, Kentucky. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m.with the meeting to follow. The guest speaker will be Jim Stewart III, state representative for Knox and part of Laurel counties. Any retiree (and spouse) receiving retirement benefits from KERS, CERS or SPRS is welcome to attend. The Harlan County High School SBDM Council will have a regular scheduled meeting at 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 13 in the HCHS Media Center. Everyone is invited to attend.

Harlan County Cooperative Extension Service invites everyone to their informative class on making your own maple syrup. The group will meet on Dec.13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Depot.

THURSDAY-SATURDAYS

Harlan County Christian School will present their annual Christmas Light Display, Harlan County Celebrates Christmas, at the Shriners Fairgrounds in Putney for the 2018 Christmas season. The display will be open to the public from 6-9:30 p.m. and can be viewed every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning Nov. 23. The display will also be open Dec. 19 (Wednesday). Sip on hot chocolate and munch on a candy cane while driving around the light display as many times as you like. Christmas music may be streamed through an FM channel on your car radio. The display is free to the public; however, donations to the Harlan County Christian School are greatly appreciated. The Shriner train will run (excluding Nov. 30 and Dec. 1) every Friday and Saturday, weather permitting. This year, the Shriner train will be running on Christmas Eve from 5 to 9:30 p.m. To sponsor a light display or for more information, contact the school at 606-574-1900.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.

DEC. 15

Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s annual Toy Store will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Dec. 15 at the church, located at 2536 South U.S. Hwy. 421, followed by a Christmas party at 2 p.m. at the old Verda school with food, fun, games and a gift from Santa for all.

Brittians Creek Baptist Church, Kenvir, will present two Christmas plays at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15. The adult play, “The Christmas Buffet,” will give you some laughs but will teach you the true meaning of Christmas. The youth play, “The Greatest Gift of All,” will show that Jesus is the greatest gift of all. They will end with a nativity followed by singing “Happy Birthday Jesus.” Rev. Don Johnson and the congregation invites everyone to attend.

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
