Lady Bears sweep Middlesboro in doubleheader

Harlan County swept a freshman/junior varsity doubleheader Tuesday over visiting Middlesboro, winning 38-24 in the freshman game and 33-26 in junior varsity action.
Jaylin Smith, a freshman forward, scored seven points to lead a balanced HCHS attack in the freshman game. Eighth-grade centers Taylor Lunsford and Breanna Massey added six points each.
Mallory James, a freshman guard, led Middlesboro with 15 points.
Middlesboro led 17-13 when the Lady Bears started an 18-0 run in the second quarter that extended through the final period. Jaylin Preston started the comeback with a 3-pointer, and McKenzie Crider and Lunsford followed with baskets. Massey had two baskets in the third quarter and Preston added one as HCHS outscored the Lady Jackets 9-0 in the third quarter to take control.
Sophomore forward Kassy Owens scored 11 points to lead the Lady Bears in the junior varsity game. Lunsford and Kelly Beth Hoskins added six points each.
James, Kirsten Keith and Grace Temple led Middlesboro with six points each.
Harlan County dropped a doubleheader Monday at Corbin, falling 41-32 in freshman action and 42-37 in the junior varsity game.
Preston led HCHS in the freshman game with nine points. Smith and Crider added six and four points, respectively. Scarlett Rowe, Massey and Izzy Kirby scored three each. Alexis Branson and Hailey Austin each added two.
Owens scored nine and Branson added eight to lead Harlan County in the junior varsity game. Haley Middleton scored six, followed by Preston with five, Rowe and Smith with three each, Lunsford with two and Jacey Lewis with one.
No scoring information was available for Corbin.
