The Loyall City Council discussed a variety of topics during a recent meeting, including free trash pickup and business privilege licenses.

According to the meeting minutes, a council member mentioned an individual had bagged up trash around the Black Bottom area and the bags were lying on the side of the road and asked if the city would pick up the bags on the next free pickup day.

The city provides free pickup days the first and third Thursday of the month, weather permitting. For free pickup, residents must call city hall ahead of time to be placed on the list.

A Loyall resident in attendance asked a question concerning how the city’s homeowner building permits impacted issues including helping a relative cut their grass.

Mayor Clarence Longworth stated there is a lot of misunderstanding about the permits.

“We are working on getting this ironed out, but we will need to make sure everything is all cleared up before we put it in the ordinance,” Longworth said. “We have a lot of people leaving grass cuttings on sidewalks and in the streets, it clogs up the drains and then it goes to the sewer and causes problems — that’s a big issue.”

During a discussion concerning business privilege licenses, a council member stated the licenses were too detailed, suggested using a scale to establish the amount owed.

“We don’t have a lot of money making businesses in Loyall,” Longworth stated. He explained the licenses needed to be detailed so the city office could figure out how much to charge.

“We will be looking at other cities to compare prices,” Longworth said.

In other council activity:

• A motion was passed stating Loyall Fire Department firefighters living in Loyall will receive one free city sticker per year;

• A motion providing inmates with pizza and a drink once a year for their assistance in cleaning brush and cutting grass on the levies and at the city’s sewer plant and parks was passed;

• A motion to provide city employees a ham or turkey for Christmas passed with no opposition;

• Loyall City Police Chief Mike Lunsford reported his department answered 34 complaints, issued 53 citations, made five arrests and served four warrants;

• Loyall City Fire Chief Vern Guffy reported his department performed two inspections and performed one response.
