Caldwell unloads 24 points in close game

Senior guard Whitney Caldwell poured in 24 points on Thursday as visiting Pineville defeated Harlan 59-53.

Caldwell was held without a basket in the first half and had four points at halftime.

Senior center Raigan King was hampered by foul trouble but finished with eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Lions. Senior guard Virginia Hall also contributed eight points.

The Lady Dragons had the lead one time in the first quarter and had to play catch up most of the night.

Eighth-grade forward Kylie Noe powered Harlan with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Noe hit 10 of 14 from the field. Aymanni Wynn and Angel Wynn each scored 12 points. Aymanni Wynn also grabbed 12 boards.

Harlan held a 32-30 rebounding edge. Pineville committed 21 turnovers compared to the Lady Dragons’ 19.

The Lady Lions had three baskets and four free throws to take a 10-6 advantage with 2:25 remaining in the opening quarter.

Noe had two baskets and Aymanni Wynn added one as Harlan took a 12-10 lead with 53 seconds left in the period.

A 3-pointer by Abigale Jackson and a free throw by King allowed Pineville to take a 14-12 edge into the second quarter.

The game was tied at 14 and 16 before Jackson hit a pair of jumper to start an 8-0 run as Pineville pushed the lead to 24-16 at the 3:30 mark.

Noe had two baskets and Faith Hoskins hit a pair of free throws to pull Harlan within two.

Caldwell hit two free at the end of the half as the Lady Lions led 26-23.

The Lady Dragons would get as close as two point in the third quarter as Pineville outscored Harlan 13-12 in the third period. Caldwell had 11 of the Lady Lions’ points in the quarter.

Hall’s basket with 2:27 to play in the game, gave Pineville a 49-41 lead.

Aymanni Wynn completed a three-point play with 44.6 seconds remaining made it a 54-49 game.

Angel Wynn nailed a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to play to cut the deficit to 54-52.

Caldwell hit three of four free throws in the final 15 seconds to give Pineville the victory.

The Lady Lions hadn’t played a game since Feb. 4, a 76-40 win at Barbourville.

Pineville (9-1) returns to action Friday at Middlesboro. The Lady Lions will travel to Somerset on Saturday and Knox Central on Tuesday.

Harlan (5-10) visits Knox Central on Saturday and Corbin next Friday.

Ava Arnett scored 10 points and Aylssa Howard added nine as Pineville claimed a 37-20 win in the junior varsity game.

Emma Mulkey and Abbie Jones had six points each for the Lady Dragons. Addison Jackson scored three. Annie Hoskins added two while Carly Madden tossed in one.
