Locals from all over Harlan County came together in honor of Virginia Jones, a resident of Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center, who turned 100 years old recently. Drivers’ road past the front of the building, shouting “happy birthday” and showing off signs made just for her. The motorcade was done in compliance with social distancing and CDC precautions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, lasting well over 30 minutes with the line of cars leading up to the U.S. 421 bypass. David L. Davies, of Harlan, was honored on his 85th birthday with a drive-by tribute, as people practiced social distancing in lieu of the COVID-19 pandemic. Davies forged a career of 50 years as an educator at Harlan Independent and also founded the nationally-acclaimed Harlan Boys Choir in 1965. (Photo courtesy of Chris Jones)
