The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to emily.sargent@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

There will be no Harlan Public Library Bookmobile runs until proper repairs are made to the vehicle. The Enterprise will post an updated schedule when the Bookmobile is up and running again.

Commonwealth Cleanup Week will be held March 22-28. Organize a cleanup in your community and be registered for a random drawing for one of six cash prizes. For more details, visit www.waste.ky.gov.

The Kingdom Come Everesting Challenge will take place on March 28. Climb from the bottom of the park road to the lake and descend to the bottom 34 times. You will have then ascended the amount of climbing on Mount Everest. There will be numerous categories and there will be a 24-hour cut off. Bring your little bunnies to this first-ever Easter Eggs-travaganza benefiting With Love from Harlan. The $5 entry fee gives you access to an afternoon free of activities and snacks. You can also have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny before hunting for eggs at no additional cost! Join the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area this year for their annual April Fools Ride! This year’s event will take place April 3 through 5 in Kentucky’s highest elevated off-roading trails! The Harlan County High School Dance Team will have a pre-tryout open gym (optional) in the HCHS gym from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 7 and 9. Those interested in joining the dance team or to just get an idea of what dance is all about are invited to attend. The event is mandatory for current dancers. Benchmark Family Services is hosting a Meet and Greet on April 11 starting at 9 a.m. at the Harlan County Library for anyone 21 years and older interested on information about becoming a foster parent. This is free to public with no obligations.

TUESDAYS

The Southeast Community College Choir has begun Spring Term Rehearsals. Meeting each Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the choir alternates rehearsals between the Harlan Episcopal Church, in Harlan, and the Choir Room of the SKCTCS Cumberland Campus. All singers who enjoy choir participation are invited to join. College students enrolled at SKCTC may also earn college credit for the class.

Works that the choir will perform at the May 2 and 3 concert dates will be chosen from the following list: The Terrible Tale of Tom Gilligan, Fiddler Man, Soldier Boy, a song cycle by John Rutter, O Magnum Mysterium by Victoria, Sicut cervus by Palestrina, Alleluia by Randall Thompson, Come to the Music by Joseph M. Martin, Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck, The Road Not Taken and Choose Something Like a Star by Robert Frost/Randall Thompson, and Ubi Caritas by Maurice Durufle.

The Harlan County Humane Society will host Bingo every Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 6:30 p.m. — $20 plays all games. All proceeds benefit the humane society.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.

With Love from Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Several Harlan churches are sponsoring vesper services beginning March 1 and continuing every Sunday during Lent at 5 p.m. Services are nondenominational, lay-led and feature scripture, prayer and music. Everyone is welcome to attend. The schedule is as follows: First Presbyterian Church, March 1; Harlan United Methodist Church, March 8; Christ Episcopal Church, March 15; Holy Trinity Catholic Church, March 22; Harlan United Methodist Church, March 29; and First Presbyterian Church, April 5 (Palm Sunday).

The Harlan County High School SBDM Council meets on the second Thursday of each month at 3:15 p.m. in the HCHS Media Center.

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
