Regional championship 3-Peat for Harlan Academic Team

After setting a school and district record in Kentucky Governors Cup District 121 competition, Harlan Elementary School students advanced to capture their third consecutive Region 31 championship during competition held at Bell Central on Feb. 29.

Region 31 is made up of the following schools across Harlan and Bell counties: Bell County, Black Mountain, Cawood, Cumberland, Evarts, Frakes, Green Hills, Harlan, James A. Cawood, Middlesboro, Page, Pineville, Rosspoint, Wallins and Yellow Creek.

Students compete in eight events which include five written assessment examinations in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts and arts/humanities. Additionally, there is an on-demand writing composition assessment, quick recall competition and a future problem solving (FPS) event which challenges teams of students to creatively address a hypothetical problem.

Harlan took top honors in the FPS competition, while racking up 23 points from the varies assessment areas. This is third consecutive regional championship for HES. They are coached by Brent Roy, Leanne Chasteen, Sierra Crow and Teresa Roy.

The Dragons placed first overall with 37.5 points. Middleboro took runner-up honors with 26, followed by Rosspoint to took third place with 16.5. Cumberland Elementary won the HUME Sportsmanship Award.

First, second and third place awards include:

• Quick Recall: First place – Middlesboro; second place – Harlan; third place — Cumberland.

• Future Problem Solving: First place — Harlan; second place — Evarts; third place — Wallins.

• Math: First place – Colt Wilson (Pineville); second place — Carson Waters (Page); third place – Ethan Muncy (Middlesboro).

• Science: First place – Rhilynn Rogers (Middlesboro); second place — Keenan Amro (Harlan); third place – Aaron Dunn (Cumberland).

• Social Studies: First place – Julianna Damaa (Harlan); second place — Sabby Mosley (Rosspoint); third place – Connor Wilkinson (Evarts).

• Language Arts: First place – Brooklyn Couch (Rosspoint); second place — Gracie Hensley (Harlan); third place – Alyssa Mullins (Middlesboro).

• Arts/Humanities: First place – Rhilynn Rogers (Middlesboro); second place — Julianna Damaa (Harlan); third place – Eli Knuckles (Bell).

• Composition: First place – Brooklyn Couch (Rosspoint); second place — Destinee Marcum (Yellow Creek); third place – Rihanna Montanaro (Harlan).
