Meyers scores 34 as Leslie pulls away for win over HHS

Leslie County used an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter to claim an 88-76 win over visiting Harlan on Monday.

The Lady Eagles led 61-55 entering the final period. Emily Bowling scored six points as Leslie stretch their advantage to 12 just two minutes later.

Leslie County used a 12-5 spurt as Lexy Meyers has eight points to make it 79-65 with 2:47 to play. The Lady Eagles closed the game by hitting seven of eight free throws.

Meyers, a senior guard, powered Leslie County with 34 points and 14 rebounds. Emily Bowling followed with 14 points. Emma Napier added 12 points and seven boards. Iris Napier added 10 points.

Senior forward Natalee King and eighth-grade guard Aymanni Wynn poured in 20 points each for the Lady Dragons. The pair had seven rebounds apiece. Ella Karst contributed 13 points. Alli Thompson scored nine.

The opening quarter featured four ties and seven lead changes. Meyers scored nine and Emma Napier had eight for Leslie County as the quarter ended at 19-all. King led Harlan with nine points in the period.

King hit two jumpers as Harlan opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run. Leslie County fought back to tie the game at 24. A basket by Bowling and a 3-pointer by Meyers gave the Lady Eagles the lead for good at the 5:52 mark. Two treys by Aymanni Wynn and a three-point play by Thompson pulled Harlan within two, at 43-41, at halftime.

Leslie County began the second half with an 8-0 run to push the advantage to 10 with 6:06 to play. Meyers scored four during the run.

Harlan fought back to within three (53-50) as five different Lady Dragons scored. A basket by King at the 3:03 mark put her over the 1,000 point mark of her high school career.

With 4:10 left in the game, Meyers hit the 2,500-point mark of her six-year career at LCHS.

Leslie County outrebounded the Lady Dragons 42-25. The Lady Eagles committed 19 turnovers compared to 12 by Harlan.

Harlan (11-15) travels to Barbourville on Thursday and visits Corbin on Friday. Leslie County (16-11) plays host to Jackson City tonight.

Bailey Smith scored 14 points and Kylie Lewis tallied 11 as Leslie County defeated Harlan 59-23 in the junior varsity game.

Emma Napier and Iris Napier tossed in nine each for the 12-3 Lady Eagles.

Faith Hoskins led Harlan with 10 points. Addison Jackson added four. Abbie Fields and Abbi Jones scored three each. Nunez tossed in two and Peighton Jones chipped in one.
