Fast start sends Pineville to win over Lady Dragons

The offense is struggling at the wrong time of the season for the Harlan Lady Dragons.

Harlan fell behind 11-3 after one quarter against visiting Pineville and dropped a 47-38 decision to the Lady Lions.

Pineville, winners of four straight, was led in scoring by junior guard Whitney Caldwell with 14 points. Brittany Davis and Raigan King each followed with nine points. Summer Partin scored eight.

“I thought we played well defensively, but we struggled to hit open shots,” said Harlan coach Tiffany Hamm. “Aymanni Wynn did an excellent job defensively in the post.”

Junior guard Angel Wynn paced Harlan with 13 points. Ella Karst scored eight.

Partin and Virginia Hall each hit 3-pointers as the Lady Lions took an eight-point advantage after one quarter.

Caldwell and Partin each hit a trey and King added three free throws as the Pineville lead stretched to 22-12 at halftime.

Karst and Angel Wynn each hit 3-pointers, but Harlan trailed 35-25 entering the final quarter.

Angel Wynn scored six points and Emma Owens contributed five in Harlan’s final period.

Pineville held Harlan’s Natalee King to no field goals. She hit six of six free throws.

Harlan (10-13) returns to action Thursday at home against Harlan County in the first game of a girls/boys doubleheader at 6 p.m. The Lady Dragons will host Lynn Camp on Friday in a boys/girls doubleheader.

Pineville (14-6) visits Maryville Christian (Tenn.) tonight and plays host to Knox Central on Friday.

Harlan outscored the Lady Lions in every quarter of the junior varsity game, winning 42-22.

Faith Hoskins, an eighth-grade guard, powered the 2-7 Lady Dragons with 14 points. Abbie Fields, a seventh-grade forward, tossed in 10 points. Emma Owens and Addison Jackson scored nine each.

Freshman center Makenna Partin led Pineville with 10 points.
