The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to emily.perkins@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

FEB. 1

The Cumberland Gap Cattle Conference will take place on Saturday, February 1, at the Lincoln Memorial University’s DeBusk Veterinary Teaching Center in Ewing, Virginia. Registration will start at 9 a.m. and the event will conclude at 3 p.m. Lunch is included with registration and a trade show will take place. Registration before Jan. 29 is $20 for a single person and $30 for a couple and $25 for single and $40 for a couple after Jan. 28 or at the door of the event. Kentucky has a growing maple syrup industry and the Kentucky Maple Syrup Association and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service have organized the first Kentucky Maple Day on Feb. 1. The Kentucky Maple Day is an excellent opportunity for you and your family to visit a local maple syrup operation in Kentucky.

Hartlove Farms is one of a handful of local maple syrup producers in Harlan County and to help raise awareness of maple syrup production. Our sugarhouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day and is located at 3029 KY 522. To get there, from U.S. 119, turn onto KY 522 at Rosspoint, go about 3.1 miles and the sugarhouse will be on the left.

FEB. 3

Champion spellers from schools across the county will compete for the titles of Harlan County Spelling Bee champions on Feb. 3 at Harlan County High School. The competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the school auditorium with primary winners and runners up from Harlan County schools competing for top honors.

Following the competition, school winners from Harlan County, Harlan Independent and Harlan County Christian will vie for the title and the right to advance to the state spelling bee in Louisville.

Prizes in each division will include $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place and trophies. All participants will receive medals to mark their success at the school level.

All competitors should arrive by 5:15 p.m.

The Harlan County Extension Service is hosting a series of four forestry-related workshops, Woodland Stewards Webinar Series. The first program, Woodland Management, will be held on Feb. 6 at the Harlan County Extension Depot, 519 S. Main Street in Harlan. Join the Benham Schoolhouse Inn for their Murder Mystery Event on Feb. 15. The event is designed for adults, but is also family friendly and open to groups, singles and couples too. The STAY Project is hosting a festival for music, arts and activism this year for Appalachian Love Week at Moonbow Tipple Coffee & Sweets. Appalachian Love Fest is Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. and will feature some of the best young musicians and artists that Appalachia has to offer.

The Southeast Community College Choir has begun Spring Term Rehearsals. Meeting each Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the choir alternates rehearsals between the Harlan Episcopal Church, in Harlan, and the Choir Room of the SKCTCS Cumberland Campus. All singers who enjoy choir participation are invited to join. College students enrolled at SKCTC may also earn college credit for the class.

With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Harlan County High School SBDM Council meets on the second Thursday of each month at 3:15 p.m. in the HCHS Media Center.

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points throughout the tri-state area and at the SIGCO office, located at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. Volunteers and friendly visitors are needed for the Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to enrich the lives of seniors in their long-term care facilities. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
