CORBIN — Even when they had a couple of all-staters in their lineup in Blair Green and Kaylea Gross, the Harlan County Lady Bears rarely won with a one-girl attack. That kind of offense, though not intentional, didn’t work Friday as the Lady Bears fell 53-41 at Corbin.

Senior forward Morgan Blakley had a big night with 27 points, but the rest of the squad hit only four of 32 shots (13 percent). HCHS trailed by only two late in the third quarter before Ccrbin went on a 10-0 run to take control.

“We just didn’t knock shots down,” Harlan County coach Debbie Green said. “We played hard, but not playing since last Tuesday probably didn’t help. We have to put this game behind us. We know those kids are capable of hitting those shots. I also thought Corbin played well and has improved a lot since last year. I thought we executed some good stuff but couldn’t finish.”

Junior guard Shelby Stewart and senior guard Marissa Scott each scored 17 to lead the Lady Hounds, who improved to 10-5 and appear to be in position to break a string of three straight losing seasons.

The Lady Bears missed their first six shots and fell behind 9-3 before Blakley, Kassy Owens and Jaylin Smith sparked a 10-0 run that helped HCHS take a 13-11 lead after one quarter.

A 3-pointer by Kelly Beth Hoskins gave Harlan County its last lead at 18-6. Stewart answered for the Lady Hounds with a 3-pointer. Baskets by Hannah Medlin and Kaila Stidham put Corbin up by four before Blakley’s basket cut the deficit to 25-23 at halftime.

The Lady Hounds extended their lead to seven late in the third quarter before a Hannah Wood 3-pointer pulled HCHS within two. Corbin started a 10-0 run on baskets by Bailey Stewart and Scott and led 40-33 after three quarters.

Six straight points by Blakley got Harlan County as close as six with 5:31 left, but Corbin closed with an 8-2 run.

Harlan County returns to action Saturday at home against Harlan in a girls/boys district doubleheader.
