Francis leads Hornets past Harlan at WYMT tourney

Phelps took control by outscoring Harlan 21-7 in the second quarter on the way to an 80-55 win Saturday in the consolation bracket of the WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott Central High School.

Senior guard Trey Francis scored 29 points to lead the Hornets. Dominick Francis and Seth Maynard added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Senior center Jon Eldridge scored 17 to lead the Dragons. Sophomore guard Jaedyn Gist added 13.

The Dragons fell to 1-5 with the loss and played their fifth straight game without sophomore guard Jordan Akal, who is expected back next week after suffering an ankle in a season-opening loss at Barbourville.

Trey Francis had four baskets in the opening quarter including a 3-pointer, as Phelps took a 19-11 lead. Francis added 10 more points in the second quarter as the lead grew to 40-18 by halftime.

Harlan returns to action Tuesday at home against Bell County in a girls/boys doubleheader.
