Victim identified in shooting, arrest made

On Dec. 13 at approximately 4:25 a.m., Kentucky State Police, Post 10, received a call of a shooting incident at a residence on KY 840 in the Baxter with trooper Aaron Caldwell responding to the scene.

The victim, 25-year-old Bradley Hopkins, was transported by vehicle to the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital, suffering from multiple gunshots to the head. He was treated and stabilized at Harlan ARH before being transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center by Lifeguard EMS for further treatment of his wounds. Hopkins’ condition is unknown and he remains at UK Medical Center.

Detectives Jim T. Whitaker and William Howard responded to Harlan ARH to conduct an investigation.

During the investigation, it was determined multiple rounds of gunfire occurred outside the residence on KY 840 resulting in Hopkins being shot in the head. It was also determined the male subject responsible for the shooting was James T. Mitchell, 23, of Coldiron.

Mitchell was located at his mother’s residence off Bradford Loop in the Coldiron where he was detained and then transported to KSP Post 10 for questioning.

Mitchell was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, three counts first-degree wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence and was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

The case is under investigation by detective Jim T. Whitaker.
