Dean selected for Frank Brittain Hall of Fame

Janice Dean, a member of the 2019 Harlan County High School graduating class, will be inducted into the Frank Brittain Academic and Athletic Hall of Fame on Dec.19, at 5:30 p.m., in the board of education conference room at the central administrative office building.

Dean qualified for admission by meeting several areas of the stringent criteria established by the hall of fame’s board of directors. She becomes only the 37th student inducted into the hall of fame since it was established in 2002.

“Janice is an exemplary, an exceptional student,” said Superintendent Brent Roark. “I got to know her through her service on the student council. She is the total package of everything we hope our children come to be.”

Roark noted her communications and interpersonal skills are exceptional and that her work in the school and community with students and adults was commendable. He pointed out that her scholarship award from Yale denotes her meritorious work and achievements.

Dean earned an ACT composite score of 34, graduated valedictorian and earned a 4.0 GPA while completing multiple honors classes and 37 dual credit hours.

A 2018 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar, Dean attended the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, Center for Rural Development’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute and Kentucky Music Educators All Festival for band.

A recipient of numerous medals in the Kentucky Governor’s Cup mathematics and quick recall competitions, she served as president of Harlan County 4-H and vice president for Harlan County High School’s Future Farmers of America.

Dean participated in multiple clubs and activities including National Beta Club, cross country, track and field, National Honor Society, Gifted and Talented, Drama, National Spanish Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars and the Superintendent’s Student Council.

Currently attending Yale University, Dean received numerous scholarships for her accomplishments.

The daughter of Pleas and Samantha Dean, she is pursuing a dual major of economics and mathematics with statistics and data science.
