Harlan, HCHS runners compete in state meet

The Harlan and Harlan County cross country teams closed out their respective seasons Saturday at the state championship meet in Lexington.

Harlan’s girls squad, which qualified for a team berth, did not score points in the Class A race with only four runners participating. They were led by junior Ella Morton, who finished 115th with a time of 23:49.05. Senior Lucy Bryson (25:10.59) was 156th, followed by Mia Pace (168th, 25:44.53) and Emma Owens (214th, 29:48.02).

In the Class 3A event, Harlan County’s boys finished 38th. Sophomore Daniel Joseph paced the Bears, finishing 177th with a time of 18:21.48. Logan Hensley (18:56.61) was 204th. Rounding out the Bears’ results were Caleb Brock (250th, 19:14.73), Zack Carmical (256th, 19:20.00), Matt Yeary (257th, 19:20.41), Lucas Epperson (286th, 20:18.95) and Sean Cooper (295th, 21:29.96).

Harlan County also had two girls participating in the event. Seventh-grader Peyton Lunsford finished 84th with a time of 21:20.04, while freshman Caitlin Rice (25:23.61) was 269th.

Eastern Kentucky also boasted several notable performances, as the Corbin boys won the Class 2A title and Pikeville’s boys finished second in Class A. Bell County freshman Caden Miracle was the individual runner-up in Class 2A with a time of 16:22.72.
