A man from Kenvir was recently arrested after allegedly holding his wife hostage and shooting towards his son’s car.

Johnny Pace, 70, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers Matthew Barger, Aaron Caldwell, Will Pope and Sgt. Rob Farley on Sept. 26.

According to Barger’s citation, troopers received a complaint around 7:30 p.m. in regard to a hostage situation in Kenvir. Pace’s daughter advised Post 10 her brother had come to the residence to pick up their mother when Pace shot a gun at his car. Pace also allegedly kept their mother from leaving the house, telling his children if law enforcement were to show up, he would shoot at them as well.

At 8:13 p.m., the troopers arrived at the residence and began setting up a perimeter at the house while Farley attempted to get Pace to walk outside and speak with him.

A few minutes later, Pace’s wife — and alleged hostage — came outside to walk her dog. The troopers let the woman know who they were and proceeded to seat her in the back of one of their vehicles. The woman told troopers she was scared and her husband was still inside the residence with a loaded 16-gauge shotgun.

Pace then walked into the front yard where troopers told him to show his hands and get on the ground when he failed to do so and began walking toward them aggressively. Barger said they announced themselves again and managed to apprehend Pace and Mirandize him without further incident, according to the citation.

Pace’s son and wife told police Pace had a loaded firearm and he had made several threats toward them and law enforcement. Troopers were able to retrieve the shotgun and two fired shotgun rounds from the front porch where Pace had allegedly shot at his son’s vehicle.

Pace was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and second-degree terroristic threatening. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $50,000 full-cash bond.

The case remains open for further investigation by KSP. The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
