Harlan native Rob Fee will join Marvel Comics for the second year in a row to write the Avengers Halloween Special. Fee began his work at Marvel as a creative writer in July 2018 with his writing of the special, which ultimately sold out within the first few days of its release.

Fee graduated from Harlan High School and said he didn’t start writing until his 30’s, which “seems like a late start, but ya know,” he said.

“I used to just write articles on the Internet. What I tried to do was just keep perspective in my field,” Fee said. “If someone told me then that five years later I would be in the position I’m in now, I would’ve called them crazy.”

Fee eventually left Harlan to write, produce, host and direct content for a variety of shows and programs.

According to Fee’s biography, he became a segment producer on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2012 and was the head writer on Disney XD’s “The IGN Show” in 2017. Fee is currently the head writer on Disney’s “Player Select.”

In addition, Fee has written for Marvel Comics, Nintendo, YouTube Red, Attack of the Show, Comedy Central, MTV’s “Ridiculousness,” CBS, CryptTV and IFC. He has also written for a vast number of online publications, including Revelant Magazine, Funny or Die, Playboy, Thought Catalog and College Humor.

Fee’s stand-up comedy album “Grape Stomp” ascended to No. 1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts in 2011 and he hosts several live shows in Los Angeles.

Fee has sold multiple feature scripts, including an upcoming film with Mar Vista Entertainment and a horror show to AMC Studios. He also developed a late-night programming block for Disney XD.

Fee most recently signed on part-time with Netflix producers to develop original content, pitching ideas to work with shows and movies already available for viewers, and is working on writing the second Avengers Halloween Special for Marvel Comics.

“The Marvel thing came along in a weird way,” Fee said.

Fee said a colleague suggested he send ideas to the comic book giant and see what they thought. He said Marvel Comics got back to him almost immediately and wanted his work.

“My first comic was at Marvel and it completely sold out,” Fee said.

Now, Fee is busy writing another special for the company for the second year in a row. He went on to reflect his time spent in the mountains before becoming a successful writer and producer.

“It’s very easy to look at what the job options are around you,” Fee said, turning his attention to the people in his hometown. “But if you work hard, you’ll be able to get so far.

“If you wait until you feel like you’re good enough, you’ll never do it. But honestly, there’s days I stop and look around at what I’m doing and I tell myself I have no business being here.”

Fee laughed as he reminisced on how he passed the time in Harlan, making mention of WYMT’s Sports Overtime segment.

“At the time, they’d take live calls every Friday when they were doing the show,” Fee said. “I used to call and prank them every Friday until my phone was banned — even my friends’ numbers.”

Fee said he has grown in his career since then, gaining over 130,000 followers on Twitter and 20,000 followers on Instagram.

Fee’s second Avengers Halloween Special is scheduled to be released on Oct. 31.
