New Harlan falls at Letcher Central

New Harlan was unable to overcome two fumbles and 135 yards in penalties in falling 42-32 at Letcher Central on Thursday in seventh- and eighth-grade football action.

Letcher took an early 8-0 lead before a 3-yard run by Deon Brown and his two-point conversion tied the game.

The Cougars scored again later in the period for a 14-8 lead.

New Harlan was driving deep in Letcher territory when a turnover ended the threat. Letcher scored on an 8-yard run for a 22-8 halftime lead.

The lead grew to 30-8 after a long kickoff return led to a 5-yard touchdown run.

A 16-yard touchdown run by Samuel Henson followed by Brown’s conversion cut the deficit to 30-16.

Letcher scored again to push the lead to 20, at 36-16.

Ethan Rhymer teamed with Caleb Johnson for a 45-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Darren Alred’s two-point conversion cut the Letcher lead to 36-24.

Letcher scored again before New Harlan answered on a 55-yard run by Johnson. Rhymer teamed with Mason Beach for the two-point conversion.

New Harlan (4-2) plays at Bell County on Sept. 19.

Jayce Brown ran for 185 yards on six carries and scored three touchdowns as New Harlan (3-1) won 26-20 in fifth- and sixth-grade action.

Jake Brewer added 86 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown. Bryson Bryant ran for 18 yards on three carries Gunner Burkhart added a two-point conversion.

Brewer led the defense with 10 tackles. Brayden Clay had eight tackles. Brayden Fultz and Raeden Tindell added six and five tackles, respectively. Bryant had a fumble recovery.

The Patriots play host to Evarts on Thursday.

Ryan Coots ran for three touchdowns and Bradon Middleton added one as Evarts (2-2) rolled to a 32-0 win over visiting Cumberland (0-6) in fifth- and sixth-grade football action Thursday.

Coots sacred in the first quarter and added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Middleton scored in the second quarter and Reggie Cottrell followed with the two-point conversion. Coots scored later in the half and added the two-point conversion for a 24-0 lead.

Coots scored the final touchdown in the third quarter. Dylan Lamber followed with the two-point conversion.

Harlan lost a pair of games Saturday against Williamsburg at the University of the Cumberlands.

The Dragons lost 40-0 in seventh- and eighth-grade action and fell to 3-6 on the season.

Harlan (3-4) lost 22-0 in fifth- and sixth-grade action as its three-game winning streak came to an end.

Harlan will play host to Pineville on Thursday.
