Totz man charged with first-degree assault

A Totz man was arrested after allegedly shooting his brother in the leg. Walter Smith, 65, was arrested by Kentucky State Police troopers on Thursday.
According to the press release, on Wednesday at 9:16 a.m., KSP received a call from Harlan City Police Department Chief Winston Yeary stating he conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 119 near Dione. The driver of the vehicle had a single gunshot wound to the leg, discovered during the traffic stop.
KSP troopers responded and began an investigation.
Murphy Smith, 63, of Cumberland, was driving the car at the time of the traffic stop. He was transported to Harlan ARH and then to the UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment.
Preliminary investigation indicates Smith was at his brother’s residence when an altercation took place between the two, resulting in him being shot in the leg. Smith then left the scene of the alleged assault to seek medical attention.
On Thursday at 8:59 p.m., troopers located and arrested his brother, Walter Smith, in Harlan.
Smith was charged with first-degree assault and was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $50,000 full-cash bond.
The case remains under investigation by KSP trooper Andy Soltess.

• Brandon Richerson, 32, of Ghent, was arrested by Harlan County Detention Center officials on July 3. He was charged with first-degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia and operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs/alcohol. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $3,500 full-cash bond;
• George Abbott, 37, of Bledsoe, was arrested by Kentucky State Police on July 4. He was charged with third-degree burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $2,000 full-cash bond, 10 percent with bail credit.
