The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

A youth rally is being planned at the Harlan Center. If any pastor or youth pastor in Harlan County would like to assist in this endeavor, email Shane Bonham at wildernesspelican314159@gmail.com.

JUNE-JULY

The Harlan County Public Library free Summer Reading Program will be held on the following dates: June 27 and July 11, 18. Program will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. The summer reading finale will begin at 10 a.m. on July 19 at the Harlan Center.

JUNE 28-30

Pine Mountain Settlement School will host a fly fishing weekend June 28-30. Learn to fly fish with renowned guide Bill Carman. For more information, contact the school at 606-558-3571.

FRIDAYS

Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more. The schedule includes: June 28, Dumbo; July 5, Mary Poppins Returns; July 12, Moms’ Night Out; July 19, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales; July 26, Cars 3; Aug. 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet.

JUNE 29

Motorcycles on Main, a bike show and benefit for 3-year-old Gunnar Simpson (who has Trisomy 18 or “Edwards Syndrome”) will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on June 29 on Main Street in Pineville. All riders and motorcycle clubs are welcome. There will also be inflatables, food, music, crafts and vendors. The cost is $20 for a spot in the show. Show beings at 2 p.m. — judging and awards at 6 p.m. Best overall bike will lead a parade at 6:30 p.m. with music and food continuing until 9 p.m. To enter your bike or reserve a vendor spot, call 606-499-6811 or 606-499-6810 (leave message or text). All proceeds go to help the Simpson family with medical costs.

JUNE 29, JULY 20; AUG. 17, SEPT. 21

Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Participants will also receive a limited edition T-shirt. Hiking dates and locations include: June 29, Pine Mountain Settlement School, 9 a.m.; July 20, Sand Cave (Blanton Forest), 9 a.m.; Aug. 17, Cumberland Shadow Trail. 9 a.m.; and Sept. 21, Little Shepherd Trail/Pine Mountain Trail, 9 a.m. To sign up or for more information, call 606-573-4495.

JULY 4

This year’s Fun Filled Fourth of July Fest will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 4 in downtown Harlan around the Harlan Center. The celebration includes a 5K, parade, live music, vendors, food, fireworks and more. Location of fireworks will be announced soon. If you are interested in begin at vendor, contact the Harlan Center at 606-573-4156. Applications can be picked up at the Harlan Center and must be turned in by June 28. Parade applications may also be picked up at the Harlan Center.

The annual Lynch 4th of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on July 4. Line up from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Lynch Church of God. Parade will pull out at 10 a.m. and head west and end at West Main Park with a brief patriotic ceremony, trophy presentation, free water, hot dogs and watermelon (while supplies last).

The city of Cumberland will celebrate Independence Day beginning at 7 p.m. on July 4 with a live Band, Big Daddy and the Heat. Fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. in downtown Cumberland. The Cumberland Tourist Commission welcomes vendors around the gazebo location — there is no charge, but you must receive permission prior to June 24. For more information, call 606-589-5812.

JULY 8-12

Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Kenvir will host Vacation Bible School, Giddyup Junction, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 8-12 with Bible lessons, crafts, games, puppet shows and a cookout each night. All ages are welcome, but ages 4 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Explorers camp, a weeklong reading camp, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon July 8-12 at Pine Mountain Settlement School for all ages. Students receive instruction in reading basics from trained instructors and enjoy recreational activities with Pine Mountain staff and a host of volunteers. JULY 8-12, 15-19, 22-26

The Cawood Ledford Boys & Girls Club will host educational and fun day camps this summer. Each week is designed to provide Summer learning opportunities parents want and kids crave. Camps are for all youth ages 6-14. Camps are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided daily. Each camp is $50 per week for the first child and $25 per week for each additional sibling. Early drop-off is available after 8:30 a.m. for an additional $5 per pay. Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.

Camp Blanton Day Camp for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 will be held July 15-18 and July 22-25. There will be swimming, boating, hiking, archery, life-saving skills, arts and crafts and more. The fee is $30 and includes lunch and T-shirt — camper ships are available. Registration is from 2 to 5 p.m. July 14 and 21 at the camp. Limit of 50 campers per week. SATURDAYS-SUNDAYS

With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

JULY 21-26

Appalachian Mountain Ecology Summer Camp will be held July 21-26 at Pine Mountain Settlement School for teens (14-17 years old). In this summer overnight camp, students will work with researchers to investigate one of its most diverse and secretive inhabitants—salamanders and explore their relationship to water quality in the region. The James A. Cawood High School 1980s Reunion will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. on July 27 at Camp Blanton. Free to all alumni, faculty and staff that attended or worked at JACHS at any time during the 1980s. There will be a potluck dinner and raffle on Saturday during the reunion. On July 26, there will be an activity day with swimming, hiking, trivia and ending in with a bonfire. Volunteers are needed to help with set up and breakdown of the event. The Southeast Community College Choir spring term rehearsals have begun. Director Ryland Pope invites all who love to sing, to join in learning beautiful music to welcome the season. The choir is mainly adults, but serious high school and college students are welcome to join. The SECC Choir is a college class, and credits through Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College may be obtained by registering through the college system. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. GED classes are being offered to anyone 19 years or older. Improve your reading, writing and mathematical skills and study to receive your GED. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points throughout the tri-state area and at the SIGCO office, located at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. Volunteers and friendly visitors are needed for the Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to enrich the lives of seniors in their long-term care facilities. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
