HCHS drops 2 of 3 against Tennessee opponents

HARROGATE, TENN. — Harlan County traveld outside the state this week for the Lincoln Memorial University Team Camp and lost two of three Thursday against Tennessee competition. The Bears, who are now 10-3 for the summer, lost to Bearden 47-28 in the opening scrimmage and fell 58-53 to Science Hill in the final scrimmage. HCHS defeated Cherokee, Tenn., 48-38 in the middle game of the day.

Harlan County led through most of the first half against Bearden, the defending 3A state champs in Tennessee, before a 12-0 run to close the half put Bearden up 26-17.

The Bears were limited to only one field goal in the first eight minutes of the second half as Bearden pulled away.

Taylor Spurlock scored nine points and Jacob Wilson added seven to lead the Bears. Daniel Carmical came off the bench to score five. Tyler Cole tossed in three. Josh Turner and Trent Noah added two each.

Spurlock scored 16 and Cole added 11 against Cherokee. Jackson Huff tossed in eight points, followed by Noah with six, Wilson with five and Turner with two.

Spurlock poured in 24 and Cole added 20 against Science Hill. Huff scored four, followed by Noah with three and Wilson with two.

The Bears will play Pineville at 2 and Eastside at 4:30 in Friday action.

Harlan County (6-3) won two of three games in junior varsity action, defeating Middlesboro 38-26 and Cherokee, Tenn., 40-15 and falling 38-26 to Science Hill, Tenn.

Freshman guards Daniel Carmical, Cameron Lester and Josh Sergent led the Bears against Middlesboro with seven points each. James Gray scored six. Dylan Hicks added five. Tristan Cooper, Cadyn Duncan and James Gray added two each.

Gray led the Bears in the loss to Science Hill with eight points. Jeremiah Clem scored seven. Lester scored five. Hicks and Sergent chipped in with three each.

Gray poured in 13 against Cherokee. Lester tossed in eight, followed by Sergent with six, Cooper with five, Hicks and Clem with three each and Duncan with two.

Harlan County will play Knox Central and Bell County in junior varsity action Friday.
