Making his first trip to the Harlan Country Club this weekend for the Harlan Invitational, Trey Bowling felt right at home, and he played like it in shooting an eight-under par 128 to win the tournament on Sunday.
“I love it here,” said Bowling moments after receiving the championship trophy. “This is a lot like my home course, Big Hickory. If you hit it well, you get rewarded, but I also had several bogeys when I didn’t.”
Bowling, a former Clay County High School star who won two regional titles before going on to golf at Eastern Kentucky University, was tied with Zach Fowler after the first 18 holes on Saturday with a 64. Bowling pulled away Sunday with six birdies and eagle on the 14th hole for another 64. Defending champ Matt Gann finished strong and moved up to second with a 132, four strokes behind Bowling. Jason Estep was third with a 134, followed by Garrett Bradley with a 135 and Pete Cornett Jr. with a 136.
Bradley Guyn, Lee Lynch and Mike Granato tied for the first flight title as each shot a 151. Perry Wyrick won the second flight with a 152. Danny Smallwood won the third flight with a 155.
