Bears win 2 of 3 in summer team camp at Hazard

HAZARD — Harlan County opened its summer schedule against three teams expected to be ranked among the leaders next season in the 14th Region and emerged with two wins on Thursday at the Hazard Team Camp at Memorial Gym.

Harlan County led 26-25 at halftime against the host Bulldogs before struggling to score through much of the second half as Hazard rallied for a 61-51 victory.

Junior guard Tyler Cole scored 24 points and senior guard Taylor Spurlock added 20 lead the Bears. Trent Noah and Jackson Huff added four and three points, respectively.

The Black Bears bounced back with a 66-57 win over Buckhorn as senior guard Jacob Wilson poured in 21 points to lead HCHS.

Spurlock added 20 points for the Bears, while Noah, an eighth-grader, scored 12. Huff scored seven, followed by Josh Turner with four and Cole with two.

Wilson had five baskets in the first half as the Bears built a six-point advantage before Buckhorn cut the deficit to 30-27 at the half.

Spurlock carried the HCHS offense in the second half with 16 points, including six free throws. Spurlock, Wilson and Noah each hit 3-pointers as the Bears built a 10-point advantage with three minutes left before putting the scrimmage away at the line.

Harlan County closed the camp with a 45-34 win over Perry Central. Spurlock scored 17 to lead the Bears, who outscored Perry 26-13 in the second half. Wilson tossed in 11. Cole and Noah added nine and seven points, respectively. Jonah Swanner chipped in with one point.

Harlan County split a pair of junior varsity scrimmages with a 42-32 loss to Hazard and a 49-32 win over Buckhorn.

Freshman guard Daniel Carmical poured in 21 points to lead the Bears against Buckhorn. James Gray scored nine, followed by Tristan Cooper with seven, Bradley Holcomb with five, Swanner with three and Hunter Helton and Jeremiah Clem with two each.

Swanner led HCHS against Hazard with nine points. Carmical scored five. Helton, Josh Sergent and Cameron Lester scored four each. Clem, Gray and Halcomb added two each.

Harlan County swept Williamsburg and McCreary Central in varsity and junior varsity scrimmages Friday at Williamsburg. Scoring information was not available at press time.
