The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.

Harlan Christian Church’s second annual Summer Under the Stars will be held on Friday nights throughout the summer on the courthouse lawn in downtown Harlan. Movies will be shown on an inflatable outdoor movie screen starting at approximately 9 p.m. There will be free popcorn, nachos, snow cones and more. The schedule includes: May 31, The Kid Who Would Be King; June 14, Hotel Transylvania 3; June 28, Dumbo; July 5, Mary Poppins Returns; July 12, Moms’ Night Out; July 19, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales; July 26, Cars 3; Aug. 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Opening day for the Harlan County Farmers Market will be June 1. The market will be located in the parking lot adjacent to Harlan Tractor Supply, 10 Comprehensive Drive, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 28.
The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op, a non-profit organization, will present an Art Extravaganza Festival in Cumberland Gap, on June 1 featuring arts and crafts of Appalachian artist from the Tri-State region. Musical entertainment will be The Three Dog Celebration Band and the talent Acree Brother, of Louisville.
The 20th annual L&N Day will be held June 1 in the heart of the Old Town Artists’ Village, North Broadway, Berea. This event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 800-598-5263 or visit www.visitberea.com.

With Love From Harlan, a local nonprofit organization, is now providing weekend meals (except the last Sunday of each month) at Christ Church in Harlan, across from Harlan High School. Meals are served from 4-5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 2-3 p.m. on Sundays.

The Miss Harlan County Scholarship/Miss Poke Sallet Pageant will begin at 6 p.m. on June 4 at the Harlan Elementary School auditorium.
JUNE 5
The annual 4-H Kids’ Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 5 at Huff Park in Harlan for all ages (free except for petting zoo and concessions).
JUNE 6-8
The 2019 Poke Sallet Festival will take place June 6-8 in downtown Harlan. For updates, check out the festival’s Facebook page or visit www.pokesalletfestival.com.

Bell County’s first Laurel Music Festival will take place June 7 and 8 at the Laurel Cove Amphitheater, organized through a partnership with Main Street Pineville, Pine Mountain State Resort Park and Bell County Tourism. Lineup and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.
JUNE 8
The annual Run for the Hills 5K will be held June 8 as part of the Poke Sallet Festival. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Harlan County Courthouse. Race starts at 9 a.m. The cost is $20 per runner. Contact any Rotary member for pre-registration or questions.
The ninth annual Sue Ford Memorial Car Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 8 during the Poke Sallet Festival in downtown Harlan, located on First and Central Streets around the courthouse. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Food, drinks and T-shirt available. Trophies will be awarded in 11 different classes. All proceeds benefit Harlan County Christian School. The annual Relay for Life Survivor’s Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. on June 10 at the Harlan County Extension Depot.

Wallins Baptist Church will host Vacation Bible School, “in the Wild,” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. nightly June 10-14. There will be crafts, snacks, music, games and lessons about Jesus.

The Harlan County Public Library free Summer Reading Program will be held on the following dates: June 13, 20, 27 and July 11, 18. Program will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. The summer reading finale will begin at 10 a.m. on July 19 at the Harlan Center.
JUNE 21
A youth rally will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 21 at Friendship Baptist Church for fifth-grade through high school students. There will be food and activities. The guest speaker is Eddie Creech.
JUNE 20-23
The second Great Mountain Mural & Community Design Mega Fest will be held June 20-23 in Harlan County, coordinated by the Southeast Kentucky Revitalization Project and Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College. Guided hike tours will be hosted to explore some of the most beautiful and unique locations in Harlan County. Sign up early — approximately 20 participants will be accommodated per hike. Participants will also receive a limited edition T-shirt. JULY 4
This year’s Fun Filled Fourth of July Fest will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 4 in downtown Harlan around the Harlan Center. The celebration includes a 5K, parade, live music, vendors, food, fireworks and more. Location of fireworks will be announced soon. Parade applications may also be picked up at the Harlan Center.
The annual Lynch 4th of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on July 4. Line up from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Lynch Church of God. Parade will pull out at 10 a.m. and head west and end at West Main Park with a brief patriotic ceremony, trophy presentation, free water, hot dogs and watermelon (while supplies last).

The James A. Cawood High School 1980s Reunion will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. on July 27 at Camp Blanton. Free to all alumni, faculty and staff that attended or worked at JACHS at any time during the 1980s. There will be a potluck dinner and raffle on Saturday during the reunion. On July 26, there will be an activity day with swimming, hiking, trivia and ending in with a bonfire. Volunteers are needed to help with set up and breakdown of the event. The Southeast Community College Choir spring term rehearsals have begun. Director Ryland Pope invites all who love to sing, to join in learning beautiful music to welcome the season. The choir is mainly adults, but serious high school and college students are welcome to join. The SECC Choir is a college class, and credits through Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College may be obtained by registering through the college system. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs.
