New Harlan, Cumberland win in tourney

New Harlan edged Cumberland 11-10 and Cumberland defeated Harlan 9-3 in middle school baseball tournament action Monday at the James A. Cawood Elementary School field.
Patrick Mandrell led the Redskins in the win over Harlan with a triple and single. Steven Childers had a double and single. Nazareth Sanchez singled twice. Shawn Carroll and Aiden Craig contributed one single each.

Brody Owens and Nate Montanaro led Harlan on offense with two singles each. Jared Moore had a double. Aiden Johnson, Baylor Varner and Will Cassim contributed one single each. Cassim drove in two runs. Owens scored two runs.
Cameron Maples started on the mound, striking out one and walking four in 1 1/3 innings. Varner struck out two and walked none in 3 2/3 innings.
Cumberland ended the game with a triple play as Carroll caught a line drive at shortstop, then threw to Alex Creech at second who threw to Kaden Boggs at first.
New Harlan moved into the championship game of the double-elimination tournament with a one-run win in the nightcap.
Colby Johnson led the Patriots with two singles. Isaac Kelly, Caleb Brewer, Samuel Henson and Ethan Griffith contributed one single each.
Johnson pitched three innings, giving up three runs on one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. Thomas Jordan gave up seven runs on three hits in three innings, with three strikeouts and five walks.
Carroll led Cumberland with two doubles. Childers, Boggs and Creech added one single each.
Sanchez struck out three and walked five in 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Creech struck out two and walked three in 2 1/3 innings. Carroll struck out one and walked none in one inning.
The tournament continues Tuesday at JACES as Cumberland plays Harlan at 5 with the winner playing New Harlan in the second game.
